Go to Navarre Beach. It's just west of Fort Walton and is waaaaaay less congested by traffic and has the same beautiful beaches. Family friendly.

and try to find 7th group...he hasn't posted in awhile, bit was stationed with one of the groups at Eglin AFB

Really? I've stayed in the panhandle the last 10 years. We just wanted something different.

We've vacationed in both areas; they are different environments. Places like Naples and Marco Island are more upscale than Destin. Personally, I think the beaches are nicer in Panhandle but both areas are beautiful. For kids, Clearwater/Tampa Bay Area is great with lots to see.

Clearwater is a really beautiful and peaceful area. Clearwater Beach has an extremely low crime rate because the police keep the riff raff out. It's been a while since I visited that part, but I absolutely loved it. It's a safe place for a family.

I used to think the same but we've found a couple that are every bit as nice as Destin. We like to get off the beaten path a bit though

As beaches go it's difficult to beat Siesta Key or Lido, but they're about an hour south of Tampa.

Care to disclose those areas? I agree that Siesta Key is great and just as nice as Destin. I wasn't as impressed with the beach we had access to in Naples.

I'll ask the wife since she usually picks them out. :)

Sand Key Park is another one we've liked. Pretty empty in the mornings so it's good for kids

If you are bringing kids, I might steer clear of Marco. It gorgeous but there's not a whole lot to do on the island and you are 30-45 min away from anywhere else.

You can rent kayaks and grab food at restaurants but not much else to keep kids entertained.

Siesta Key is my favorite beach on the West Coast. That's my suggestion.

We're staying at Clearwater, but don't mind taking a day or two to visit other places. When we stay in Panama we usually visit other beaches a couple of times. I actually thought about driving to Crystal river for a day while there for a boat ride.

Great idea. The state park is awesome.

Can't go wrong with Clearwater. Tarpon Springs up US19 is an interesting small town with lots of history about the Greek immigrants who started the sponge diving business. Tarpon Springs is also the jump off place for the Anclote Key Preserve State Park - I haven't been there yet but the pictures look beautiful.

I saw Tarpon springs on the map and wondered about it. I'm gonna look it up.

The original Hooters is/was on Gulf to Bay just as you get into Clearwater from Tampa. Go pay homage to my second favorite orange and white team.
