Clay Travis on Butch

No. Tyler Bray and Justin Hunter owned the Cincy players on the field. Butch is not Dooley. Last night sucked, but we're not what we were.

Dooley out coached Butch like Saban did Les. Dooley as stupid as he was, had balls to make fake attempts (Onside kick after first TD vs Butch'a Cincy/ Fake FG in OT vs Missouri). When's the last time butch has had balls to call a play to flip the game? )3 hasn't.

Don't talk about Dooley having balls that Butch doesn't. I can easily destroy that argument by saying this... Mizzou 2012. The biggest pu$$y decision in the history of Tennessee football.

Butch 4 and 1 in the red zone vs OU and he kicks a FG. Butch has no balls.

I'm not actually convinced Butch is better than Dooley. Dooley coached in a much tougher SEC East. If he could just recruit players I'd say he would be flat out better than Lyle.

Can you honestly say this program is in the same shape as it was under Dooley?

If youre answer is yes, you are an idiot.

Everyone in the east has got worse compared to us since Dooley's time but we still don't look great and we aren't winning the division.

We are not what we were, but I believe we are headed back there. Once all the players who are eligible to try for the NFL bolt and Butch has another sub-par recruiting class to replace them, you will see that Butch has already reached his peak (last year).

And if he could also not completely give up at the first sign of going down. Look, I know the first 5 wins of this year were almost 100% luck, but had Dooley been wearing the headset, the Florida, Georgia, A&M, Va Tech, and App State games would all have been blowout losses. Alabama was the second game I can remember that a Jones coached UT team laid down and took a beating (Oregon being the other).

Also for those saying that there is no worse than Dooley... as a Boiler fan, I see that bet, and raise you:

The east is in shambles. A team on the positive side of mediocre should have no issues. Yet here find ourselves on the outside looking in. We lost scar because we weren't motivated and ready to play, that is a coaching indictment.

I'd you can't win the division this sorry you just aren't a very good football team. It is what it is.

Butch can recruit. Not a sec coach though

If you compare their recruiting classes, they are similar and on the same path. Dooley had a top 10 class too and it went downhill after that. Last two Butch classes, last year and this year are not championship level. Only difference between them is the legacy recruits and quantity of players. Butch signed 85 players in 3 years.

And win totals (provided we win out)

Butch constantly plays not to lose. Will be MO of his career here. Dooley atleast was too stupid to know when to go for it or not.

Like the Missouri game when he really went for broke (40yd line, 43sec, 2 to's)? Dooley was terrible. The argument that Butch is no better is simply an emotional response to Saturday night (or one being used to make money)

I was talking recruiting but they both were 21-17 after 38 games. I do think the talent this year is very good, but look at next year. In the SEC, you can't sustain the same level on one or two classes, you have to stock them on top of each other. Promising early PT and a vision are no longer selling points, he has to sell himself and his program.

Look at the last two offers, a 2 star QB and now a 0 star TE/QB that jumped on the offer. Congrats to Brown, glad he got a dream offer, but is a kid plan B, C, or D if the competition is Bethune Cookman especially with no room left in the class? 26 already in the class and 22-24 is the expected room. Why not wait to see where the bigger fish land and make it a conditional offer for NSD?

Jones is a "Lemon Lot" salesman. His witty quips and clean suits playing the roll of a rockstar coach is nothing more than polishing a turd. He just needs to put up or shut up. Either you can run a program or you can't and we all see what is obvious.

Butch loses fewer of the "games we shouldn't lose" than Dooley. That's about the only difference. I would give recruiting an edge but recruiting is only half the part. You have to develop those recruits too. Given that Butch is an offensive mind and background, he hasn't developed anything on offense the past two years.
