Clay Travis destroying Dooley on 104.5

CT "Highly rated in the US?"

1. How highly rated is he in the Nashville Metro area alone?
2. What's the quality of his competition?
3. Does he have a nationwide audience via Itunes?
4. What are his numbers?

I'll hang up and listen.

(1) & (2): they're very highly rated in Nashville because there is no competetion. 560 has Jim R and 102.5 has something - maybe Brad Hopkins.

Gotta give him another year, boys. Anyone who wants Dooley out now does not have the long term interests of our program at heart.

The objective of radio talk shows is to drum up contraversy. If they painted a rosey picture of everything, no one would listen nor talk about it. This is just another example. As soon as the last conference championship game is played they'll start the annual playoff rant. If a playoff was every implemented, it would be how the bowls were better. In basketball, its how some team got screwed getting into MM.

Thing is the OP and others listened to him and are now talking about him. Bad pub is just as good as good pub in their business.

Giving a delusional fan, hack journalist, and shock jock a job on a 3-hour radio show, is probably one of the reasons that station was failing in the first place. The only saving grace of that show is Brent Dougherty, and his back has got to be hurtin' from carrying Clay and Blaine for so long.

I posted this at the bottom of Clay's "article", but I wanted to share it with VN since I doubt he actually bothers to read those comments.

Clay, you're wrong. UT fans aren't apathetic. After one and a half seasons at UT, Coach Dooley has't had enough time IN the seat for it to get hot yet. We're being reasonable and patient. What do you expect us to do? Take to the streets and burn mattresses and Dooley in effigy? If by the end of 2013, he's still only a .500 coach then the VOL Nation will feel like he has had enough time to show significant progress - which I believe he will.

Three years at La Tech -where he had to be both the head coach and athletics director- and one and a half years at Tennessee -which was a complete dumpster fire upon his arrival- is hardly enough time to be making valid value judgements about Dooley's ability as a head coach. Four to five years in one program and then you can make an accurate assessment.

I'm sorry if Coach Dooley's bamboo analogy was a bit too cerebral for you. The team is young, but he isn't using that youth as an excuse. There's a lot that goes into building a winning program and a lot of it isn't always very obvious. It takes a lot of little things that no one takes notice of and then seemingly overnight that program -like bamboo- will suddenly seem to have come out of nowhere and the more easily recognisable signs of progress like WINS will be there.

I'm normally not this rude to people, but your article screams of "butt hurt". I think your question to Coach Dooley at the post game press conference was absurd and the coach let you know it and you were embarrassed publicly in front of your peers. Now you're writting out of embarrassment and irritation. The question was dumb and the coach let you know it. Put your big boy pants on and deal with it like a professional journalist. My prediction, in one to two seasons you'll be hoping hard that no one remembers your little hissy fit when Dooley hurt your feelings because you'll be singing his praises right along with all of the others. Let me tell you now, we true UT fans will not have forgotten.

B-I-N-G-O..... Great post!!!

Sometimes its almost impossible to accept the truth when you want so bad for it not to be the truth. I think Clay and many others on here are just more realist. We are taking what we see and it isn't adding up. We are setting our orange glasses aside. We wish it weren't the truth, but it is.

Clay does not impress me. Does not know the game never played the game. Clay is all about Clay.

He only recently realized they have spring practice in high school football.

Has no knowledge of the game at all...... IMO

Call yourselves "realists" if it makes you feel better, but if you're unwilling to give the staff more than a year and a half before you give up on them then I think your not a "true VOL fan". I don't mean to be insulting, but it takes time to fix what's broke.

Am I a UT homer? Damn friggin right! Am I a Dooley homer? Also correct! If Coach Dooley isn't able to fix things here at UT and ends up stepping down or getting fired then I'll be a fan of UT and whatever team he coaches in the future.

I don't know what you guys are looking for in a coach. I guess it must take a big name guy that all of the "experts" agree is a great coach. Whoever that mythical coach is I do not believe ANYONE could turn this program around in the time frame that ya'll seem to demand.

You don't wish to wear your orange colored glasses anymore? Please pass them my way. I broke mine cheering myself horse for my VOLS and their coach.

somebody needs to ask Clay Travis if he had pre-marital sex, and then remind him how ridiculous his "journalism" is

Clay's radio "show" (if you can call it that. It's more like three hours of unintelligible rambling) is on the level of Chris Vernon.

As a national writer, Clay's actually pretty good. When it comes to UT athletics, though, simply pathetic.

Lot of the people ready to burn their mattresses probably don't know that the Virginia Tech fans were ready to throw Frank Beamer out the door after a couple years on the job because he didn't turn the program around instantaneously.

That would speak to youth, but doesn't address the fact that it's simply by default. Doesn't address the quality of the few upperclassmen out there either.

I hear you, but assuming a reasonably consistent talent level, the senior will be better than the underclassman because of experience.

But, you know, it's obviously better to judge on a case-by-case basis with full knowledge of all the attendant facts... if you have time. Lies, damn lies and statistics and all that...

Have you actually read his writing? He isn't a good writer at all. He's nothing more than an ambulance chaser. He writes about SEC football because he knows the insane fanbases will read every single thing he writes intended to strike a nerve and keep coming back to blow him up on his site, making him richer in the process. Actual thought process, logic, and writing ability when discussing sports, period, are non-existent.

The only thing he is good for is a legal angle to sports, which 99% of the time is useless, but the whole realignment issue is something he can offer at least a little insight on. When he's not busy worshiping the alter of Mike Slive in his house.

Clay is all about Clay and promoting nothing but Clay. He's a self absorbed over-the-top buffoon. He only poses questions to Dooley and others (see the "Are you a virgin?" to Tebow at media days a few years ago) to get a reaction and shock. He's the Howard Stern wannabe of the sports media. Once you see through that, it's easy to know that his opinions belong with the lunatic fringe.

Derek Dooley Squarely On Hot Seat, Even If His Momma Doesn't Like It : Outkick The Coverage

There is Clay's article, I'm not sure if it has been posted in this thread but if you read it he makes some pretty interesting points.

I like Dooley, and realy want him to succeed but the more I go back and forth with it, the more I come out on the end with a bad feeling. If you watch that video above at 9:30 where Clay asks him the question about beating Georgia/Florida, the response he gives is unbearable. He looks very unconfident and the answer he gives is not promising. Water a bambo plant? I mean I know it's right after the game, he doesn't want to deal with media most likely, but that just sounds like 'we are trying to do the right things, and working towards success and hopefully one day it will pay off.' No, thats not acceptable. Perception becomes reality, and the way he is talking (perceiving) is that we are awful and we can't compete with these guys. If he talked like that leading up to the georgia game to our guys, no wonder we came out and played like that. he needs to fuel our guys with confidence and make them believe that they can actually win before they step on the field.

I know many of you don't like Basilio, but what he said today about Dooley just being on the bad side of luck maybe right. I went to many basketball games during the Buzz Peterson era, and as nice and likeable of a guy Buzz was it just wasn't in the cards. And with Dooley....the two screws job last year, herman lethars, justin hunter being untouched and tearing his acl, bray breaking his thumb on a helmet? Nice guys must finish last.

I really want Dooley to succeed here, as I said, and I vote to give him the time to see if he does. But at this point in time, it is hard to see any optimism in the future. Especially when you hear how Dooley talks of our team at pressers??? Cmon man, GET SOME CONFIDENCE in this program!!!! If he doesn't have it, then how do the players or fans? Even if there isn't any, he needs to try to create some...get these kids to have some swagger.

You can see the heartbreak in Coaches face and in his voice. He really wants Tennessee football to succeed and I believe he will give everything he has to make that happen.

Clay Travis likes to invent his own fantasy realities. Dooley isn't on the hot seat from anyone but the fans and he wont be until he's had some time to develop a full recruiting class under his regime.
He ignores or dismisses the facts that does support his agenda. :lolabove:

Clay is officially a shock jock now. Why even start this now? It's a year too early Clay. Who in their right mind would want to come here if they didn't allow Dooley at least 3 years after the **** storm he inherited. Some people need to start thinking with their brain and not their hearts.

This was Mike Hamilton's final up yours to everyone on his way out the door. He knew we'd have to allow Dooley 3 or 4 years whether he sucked or not. The failures came from a whole lot of bonehead from the AD's office.
