Cigar /Pipe Smoking thread

So far, in my new journey into the culture, I have bought Quiet Nights, Autumn Evenings, and a house blend at the local B&M that I believe is ref Virginia based. Early Morning Pipe and Plum Pudding are on my to-do list. I was pleasantly surprised how much I like the Latakia forward Quiet Nights. I was one of the assumed that I would only care for aromatics. So far, I think I love the house blend the best. They sell about 7 pounds a week of it for good reason. How would you desribe perique?
I live in Sumner County and have enjoyed a few blends from our local tobacco shop. I have also purchased from Country Squire and Straus Tobacco in Florence, KY who has a blend called Sleepy Hollow that is great when you can get it. I've not tried Quiet Nights or Plum Pudding but will at some point. Much like you I find I like the non-aromatics more than aromatics and I really enjoy latakia in the blend. I think you will enjoy Early Morning Pipe as I think it is similar to Quiet Nights. I think the best word to describe perique is spicy, but it seems to tone down a straight Virginia, I like a Va/Per more than a straight Virgina.

Next week I am going to start smoking some Christmas blends that I bought. Looking forward to the season. I have a few Christmas pipes that I'll only smoke between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.

Interesting. I didn’t know there was a difference in aromatic and non aromatic as it relates to pipe tobacco. I’ve enjoyed the room aroma of most pipes I’ve been around.
I live near and stop in Strauss occasionally. Great store and friendly people.
I have a friend that I smoke with, he’s a pipe smoker and I’d like to gift him some of the Sleepy Hollow blend you mention. Is it considered an aromatic blend? Do folks absolutely prefer one over the other or go back and forth as environment dictates?

Aromatics and non-aromatics both smell great. I stopped by Straus in October and they were out of Sleepy Hollow. I think August/September is when you can get it. They produce a limited supply each year.
Aromatic blends are cased or topped with a flavor like vanilla, cherry, maple or rum etc. I think most pipe smokers smoke both even if they favor one over the other. They will have several house blends at Straus, I’d pick their brain on a good blend to gift to your buddy.

I tried to get Sleepy Hollow but it was sold out already.

Not a huge difference between the house blended virginias and aromatic but when you light up a blend with Latakia in it, there is a definitive difference

The postman delivers: My latest purchase was two bundles of overruns/seconds - La Alianza maduro robustos from EPC’s Dominican factory, and Oliva Sumatran rounds (didn’t have the perfect density for box pressing). Think about an Oliva box pressed robusto with a Sumatran wrapper…

This morning’s post breakfast puff is one of the latter.

It’s not officially Winter for a few more days, but the temperatures say it’s time for maduros and med-full to full bodied cigars. 😉

IMG_1824.jpegNew blend day. First bowl a little ummm I don’t really know the word to call it. I strange flavor. Can’t say it’s love at first puff but I’m glad I tried it. It may grow on me. The common term I hear to describe the taste is hay. I concur.
