Chucky still loves UT

So in your opinion, is UT prepared to offer the right person the right amount of money?

Cuz imo, 2 mil/yr is gonna keep attracting the same unproven young coaches (like Dooley).
It's pretty hard to imagine getting someone who has a worse resume than Dooley does.

Homersim is the mother of disappointment..............Gruden would not even return a phone call from Hart if he called. Get over it people. If UT is such a desirable place of employment, how did we end up with a HC from La Tech with a career losing record?

Was it the product or the salesman? Hopefully Dooley puts it together this year, but if he doesn't, we'll find out the answer to the question.

Really? you want to rely on a guy that's been out of coaching 4 yrs, never been a HC of a college, been out of the college game 11 years, and an overall winning percentage of .540.

Dream on.

Sounds similar to Kiffin. Somehow that dingleberry is making out, even with sanctions. I think Gruden would make a great hire, but I don't think he comes here.

we would NOT begin to get into the ballpark of dollars it would take for him to even think about it. Would not get close.. Now if he would come for 2 million, we would think about it.

Are we no longer a football school? I don't want Dooley to fall on his face, but if he does, we need to offer more than 2 million a year. We won't compete with the big boys if we don't pay the money.

Larry, you normally have your finger on the pulse of the AD. Where is that 2 million number coming from? Surely they're willing to go higher for the right guy. I really don't want to see us facing that predicament. I hope Dooley works out. But if he doesn't, then Hart needs to hit a homerun. If he doesn't, I could see the AD losing quite a bit of money.

Uh...hell...yes...name me someone who has a better resume in the college ranks.

That may be right. I'm just don't buy that Tennessee wouldn't go higher than 2 million on Gruden. In fact, I find it hard to imagine anyone qualified coming for much less.

it would take Saban money for him to consider and we will not approach that in any shape or form for Gruden or anyone else with that type resume. It is not soemthing our admin will consider (admin includes off campus decision makers).

not at this point in time. UT might get some buyin to 2.5 or maybe 3 but the names peopel toss out are in the 5 million range. Lots of reasons Tennessee doesn't go tehre but the major two are:

its not part of Tennessee's DNA and budget wise, not a move they can make at this juncture.

10 years down the road? perhaps they decide to compete financially. Right now, would be impossible.

I answered elsewhere. we can't afford to pay a "home run". I could see going to 3 million, but that would likely mean reduction in staff wages. but we are not about to get a coach in the 5 million range which is "home run" territory..

If CDD can't retain it this year, the next hire is known IMO. He would already have majority of his staff here and in place. He would be willing to keep most. He might get more than 2 but he certainly would take that so why would we offer more? JMO

Sounds like Kirby Smart to me.

Chris Petersen

Chip Kelly

Bob Stoops

Gary Patterson

Kyle Whittingham

Shall I continue?

All have a better record than Chucky. Heck, Dooley has a better college record than Chucky (but that's not saying much)

Who really cares what he thinks of UT. He's not worthy to walk the sidelines General Neyland once walked imo.

You are dead on LWS, and CJG isn't necessarily a home run. Just think Albert Pujols with the Angels..... I think Kirby Smart might be that home run but with a smaller price tag. Pretty sure that is who you are talking about.

Isn't CDD's buyout still in the 5 million range up to signing day NEXT year? I have heard 3 and 5 but have heard 5 mentioned more often.

Do you really believe anyone outside of Nicktator runs that defense? :birgits_giggle:

5 until 2/15/2013.. drops to 4 million then for the next 2 years I believe.... could be 1 year but I think I remember it being 2.

So let me get this straight, Hammy screwed up on Dooley's contract handicapping us yet again? If Dooley fails, Smart gets the nod? Despite the fact that football is the lifeblood of UT athletics, they're willing to let it decline into mediocrity? Not saying Smart is mediocre, just saying lack of desire to pursue a well-known coach shows a willingness to risk it.

Putting your biggest moneymaker at risk during a tough economy is not a wise move. I bleed orange, but facts are facts, if the UT admin willingly throws away the program with the expectation that fans will just loyally and blindly follow along, they're crazy. Not all of us have extra money at hand. What we do scrape together for entertainment is currently spent on the Vols, but if the higher ups are going to turn their backs on the fans, then eventually the fans who are struggling are going to find something more entertaining for their hard-earned money. They're looking at killing the proverbial golden goose. Doesn't make sense to me. Healthy football program equates to a healthy AD IMO. Bad football equals loss of much revenue.

I would LOVE to have gruden as HC at UT, but...BUT it is not worth blowing a season for. I would much rather win 10 games this year and keep dooley than win 6 and Get gruden. Players come with wins, 10 win season means players want to play, players want to play for winners. Win now and get better each year

In the AD's mind, that could be the "home run" you are talking about..

A "home run" in name doesn't ensure success either.. Might be worse, as far as the program is concerned, to spend 5 million on a coach that fails. See Notre Dame.. cost them 19 million to fire a "name" coach.

Dooley's buyout is what it is because this is a tough job. A Saban like contract means huge payoff. I think Saban's is, he can leave without penalty but if he is fired, he gets paid fulll contract.

When you hire, just lots of factors involved.

My position si, look for the best possible coach regardless of cost and see if we can make it work. If it doesn't work out, we tried. We then hope for the best.
