Homersim is the mother of disappointment..............Gruden would not even return a phone call from Hart if he called. Get over it people. If UT is such a desirable place of employment, how did we end up with a HC from La Tech with a career losing record?
Really? you want to rely on a guy that's been out of coaching 4 yrs, never been a HC of a college, been out of the college game 11 years, and an overall winning percentage of .540.
Dream on.
we would NOT begin to get into the ballpark of dollars it would take for him to even think about it. Would not get close.. Now if he would come for 2 million, we would think about it.
That may be right. I'm just don't buy that Tennessee wouldn't go higher than 2 million on Gruden. In fact, I find it hard to imagine anyone qualified coming for much less.
So in your opinion, is UT prepared to offer the right person the right amount of money?
Cuz imo, 2 mil/yr is gonna keep attracting the same unproven young coaches (like Dooley).
Are we no longer a football school? I don't want Dooley to fall on his face, but if he does, we need to offer more than 2 million a year. We won't compete with the big boys if we don't pay the money.
Larry, you normally have your finger on the pulse of the AD. Where is that 2 million number coming from? Surely they're willing to go higher for the right guy. I really don't want to see us facing that predicament. I hope Dooley works out. But if he doesn't, then Hart needs to hit a homerun. If he doesn't, I could see the AD losing quite a bit of money.
I answered elsewhere. we can't afford to pay a "home run". I could see going to 3 million, but that would likely mean reduction in staff wages. but we are not about to get a coach in the 5 million range which is "home run" territory..
If CDD can't retain it this year, the next hire is known IMO. He would already have majority of his staff here and in place. He would be willing to keep most. He might get more than 2 but he certainly would take that so why would we offer more? JMO

You are dead on LWS, and CJG isn't necessarily a home run. Just think Albert Pujols with the Angels..... I think Kirby Smart might be that home run but with a smaller price tag. Pretty sure that is who you are talking about.

So let me get this straight, Hammy screwed up on Dooley's contract handicapping us yet again? If Dooley fails, Smart gets the nod? Despite the fact that football is the lifeblood of UT athletics, they're willing to let it decline into mediocrity? Not saying Smart is mediocre, just saying lack of desire to pursue a well-known coach shows a willingness to risk it.
Putting your biggest moneymaker at risk during a tough economy is not a wise move. I bleed orange, but facts are facts, if the UT admin willingly throws away the program with the expectation that fans will just loyally and blindly follow along, they're crazy. Not all of us have extra money at hand. What we do scrape together for entertainment is currently spent on the Vols, but if the higher ups are going to turn their backs on the fans, then eventually the fans who are struggling are going to find something more entertaining for their hard-earned money. They're looking at killing the proverbial golden goose. Doesn't make sense to me. Healthy football program equates to a healthy AD IMO. Bad football equals loss of much revenue.
