Chuck Webb Info???

Cobb was more of a power runner, while Webb had the instincts to find any gap and boom, he was gone like a cat.
Webb had zero hestiation, would hit the gap at full speed and created nightmares for the linebackers and secondaries trying to slow him down as he used his blockers masterfully.

If Jamal wouldn't have gotten hurt in 98, I think he would have won the heisman. (Or it would have been close with him and Ron Dayne.) But when he got hurt he wasnt the same in 99.

I think if he would have came back for his senior year, we would all be saying he was the best in UT history, because he would have been a beast and probably would've won the heisman.

I'm from Toledo, Oh the same city and state chuck was born and raised. He used to be my coach when I was in junior high from 92 to 93 we won the Championship that year! I remember when I was a kid and he used to play for Macomber High School. He was so great that often times he didn't have to play the second half of High School football games because he had already gained 200+ yards in the first half and his team was leading by three or four touchdowns. I saw him a few months ago. He still looks the same. And looks to be in incredible shape. I told him he looks like he could still put on the pads and play for the NFL.

An interesting thing about Webb was, he was only 5'9 and 200 lbs. Very similar in size to Emmitt Smith and Barry Sanders. But he always seemed to play much bigger.

IMO the thing that separated Webb was his speed, not just his 40 time, but his ability to accelerate and turn the corner before the defense could reach him.

I think that one of the things that says the mos about webb is that we had the ball at the Colorado 45 with 8 seconds left in the 1990 pigskin classic. Rather than try to take a shot to vince moore, harper, or pickens, Majors handed the ball to Webb who rumbled, stumbled, and bumbled down to the 20 before one of the last guys was able to stop him. I used to wonder why majors did that and I always assumed that it was bc Majors was so conservative he didn't want a turnover and score, but Iactually think it was bc he legitimately believed Webb had a better chance.

I was so heartbroken when he left for the NFL. Besides money, does anyone know what other factors lead to him leaving after his injury? Was he unhappy in Knoxville?

That was a time when people didn't recover very well (if at all) from acl repairs. He prob received some crappy advice that he'd be better served by going pro and not risking further knee damage by coming back.

I beg to differ.....Jamal was CLOSE....but when it came to the prototypical running back, Chuck was it. Vision, power, speed, instinct.....he just had it.

Jamal dogged it his last year with the Vols. Chuck Webb was a beast and was way better as a vol in my opinion.

I think I heard he might be selling real estate? I'm not sure though. He is in my top 5 favorite Vols of all time. He is one of the best I have ever seen. It's to bad he is hardly known by many people across the country.
see above post....

New to the site, but old enough to remember Chuck Webb. Best pure running back to ever play at Tennessee, imo. Had ability to get to full speed very quickly, as well as, changing directions w/o losing speed. Great blend of power, speed, and balance.

Welcome to the board! Great first post! I think this sums it up perfectly.

Unbelievably, Chuck Webb only started 8 or 9 games in his short career. I've been watching the Vols since 1970 and IMO Webb is the best running back we've ever had. Too bad it ended so soon. I do remember one magazine listing him as the Heisman favorite going into his sophomore year (his career ended in the second game)

I also remember that. I'm almost certain is was SPORT magazine which went under in 2000.

I almost hate thinking about what Webb could have accomplished had he stayed healthy. I still carry a grudge against Pacific for that.
