Chris Petersen thread (merged)

They put his at 9 to make him stay for a while..... It also has to be paid in 45 days..... It is one of the largest buyouts anyone has....... Buyout if they want to leave.

ISU made sure to put it had to be paid in 45 days for a reason.........they are not just going to let their coach go right now.

He has done well this year and may be up for an extension if so I would assume he would get that changed, but for now I doubt ISU would negotiate much.

If he’s for sure gone...they’d negotiate.

Again, it may be the battered vol syndrome, but does anyone really see UT pulling off a coaching coup like Peterson? Making him one of the highest paid coaches in the country? This simply is not what UT does. I go back to '65 and other than Majors, we don't have any "big name" hires. No, I see a 3 mil guy being hired. Brohm or Schiano.

No one really knows....... But Currie is in his first year...... If he hires a Brohm or "like" coach and it doesn't work......that is the end of him here and his stock would plumit.

Also Tennessee is paying Butch 8 mil to do nothing and has around 30 mil into Butch over 5 years....... Not sure they want to do that again.

If reports of Currie offering Gruden 10 million are true, then I hage zero problem with offering Petersen 9 million.

If we offered gruden 10, with Peterson’s proven success at multiple schools, I’d be fine if they gave him 12.

It would only make sense to offer the proven guy more than the “hopefully” guy.

Maybe they would but why?

No one has a contract which the buyout has to be paid that much that quickly......they did it for something.......so why would you...if Tennessee wanted him why not at least make them pay to steam him away?

Peterson = Grand slam in the 9th with two outs.
Make no mistake, Currie has some fortitude to go after the big fish.

Hope youre right. If he nibbles on the bait and backs off, Currie needs to jump in the water and drag him out.

If it doesn't happen...... At least people can know Currie tried the biggest fish possible..... Well biggest possible with any chance of landing.

Guy states he’s leaving and there’s no putting the genie back in the bottle. You lose the kids and the whole purpose of keeping him becomes moot. The buyout is intended to discourage INTEREST from bigger schools. When that fails? You negotiate. Doesn’t matter when you get the money...you take it.

Currie gonna strut out with a big smile on his face and introduce DJ Durkin. You’re welcome.

Good coach.....concerned about ability to recruit the South. We live or die by recruiting Georgia,Florida, and NC

McElwain had a 7 mil buyout at CSU....Florida paid 3 mil as you stated..... But also gave them a game and 2 mil..... Then McElwain still had to cover the next 2 Mil

7 mil buyout.........7 mil payout

Most buyouts are on the high side if the school wants to get rid of a coach and on the low side if the coach wants to leave. In first contracts the buyout is high to get the coach to stay....... But most are rarely that high and never has a buyout like that been negotiated lower. When Tennessee got Butch they paid his buyout and also paid the unpaid portion of his previous buyout.

With Stoops gone, Jimbo having. Bad year and rumors of leaving, Petersen would now be the 4th rated coach in the nation.

Recruits come to Tennessee anyway...... They would certainly come with a coach like Petersen.

Unless Currie has done a masterful job at smoke screens it has to be Petersen or Gruden. No search firms hired and now the announcement is supposed to be made no later than Momday! My bet is on Petersen a little over Gruden.

Would have to agree on that

Reason I brought all that up in the first place? Everything is negotiable. And I wasn’t talking dollar amount...I’m talking timeframe. After they lose him they can give a crap when they get their money...as long as they get it! Give Campbell a one million raise to $3 mil and consider the $2 mil per as part of his salary that he’s paying out. 3 seasons should be enough to gauge whether he’s the program developer we need...then spring for the remaining $3 mil and pay him market value. Removes the obstacle of paying a huge buyout UP FRONT on an unproven candidate. Build a microscopic buyout into his contract beforehand in case he doesn’t work out. All less than one season of one of our fantasy candidates.

If you hold the royal flush no need to negotiate.

CSU got all of theirs and ISU would in some way..... But I don't feel Tennessee would even try it since they now paying Butch 8 mil and spent over 30 mil on the Butch hire.

No one knows but I would put him as long of a shot as Gruden.

This is why I believe Currie had a person in mind to begin with....maybe he even knew they would accept the job.....
All this other stuff may just be blowing smoke until the unveiling.....
