luchs should be drawn and quarterd ,he is one of the many things wrong with collage sports ,ofcourse a kid will take money if he is a long way from home and he hasnt got money.but also every school has given money or grades or something.why else would players go somewhere that they would not play very much until they are juniors.look at flordia and bama, usc have top five class every year but some players never see pt.

Anyone ever notice that people believe what they are already disposed to believe?

Let's look at this logically:

1) Could this have happened?
Yes

2) Did this happen?
If you believe the guy who says he paid players you most assuredly say yes.
If you are predisposed then yes.

3) Just because he said it did, does it make it fact?
No. But it doesn't negate it either.

4) Does this guy have a motive for bringing all of this up (if in fact that it did happen the way he says)?
Can you say Book anyone?

5) Does the press in general ever sensationalize a story to sell magazines, newspapers, or widgets?
Yes indeed.

So it boils down to he said he did cough up tons of cash to these guys.

Where's the paper trail and where did he get said cash? His bar mitzvah funds must have been a big chunk of change...

This is not an ad hominem attack on the claimant by the way. Just that I find it amusing that people jump into these things without thinking about logical fallacies like Appeal to a Common Belief:

i.e. "You assume this goes on, so it must go on."

Second, we're dealing with the logical fallacy of biased sampling

i.e. "Some college athletes are know to have taken money. Therefore all college athletes have taken money (or have had the opportunity to)"

I love how people just jump right in to the worst case scenario.

And before you start the ad hominem attacks (i.e. I'm stupid if I don't think this goes on), I'm not saying it doesn't. I'm just saying you guys jump to conclusions based on very little confirmed evidence.

Just look at all the damn rumors people have run with over the past week.....
(1) Bray leaving
(2) Oku leaving
(3) Pearl resigning
(4) yada yada yada

Oh for the days when coming and reading this board actually let you leave more informed...

G'night gentlemen.

I'd say the journalistic standards of Sports Illustrated are a tad more rigorous than what gets posted on an anonymous message board, so your comparing this article to random threads started here is pretty funny.

It is kind of funny. Although, I'm not convinced that SI's journalistic standards are any better than most of the media's - but I concede the point that its a tad bit higher than this message board.

According to the article, eight guys say they took $$ or benefits from this guy. Okay. I have no problem with that part. Seven say they knew him but declined comment, which raises the question why? But offers no evidence one way or the other. Six people denied all or part of what Luch said. That becomes a question of who do you believe.

What cracks me up is the jump to "all programs are taking $$" kind of mentality.

I guess I'm more incredulous that someone posts something that they read on another site and then that gets repeated over and over again as fact and people go off the deep end. (Not necessarily the SI article in this case, just in general).

Its like the title of this thread, did I miss where Chris Mims and Chuck Webb are among the eight guys who said they took $$? (RIP Chris) But to the casual reader around here, this will be a given from now on - repeated to anyone who will listen and in a short time be "fact" that every informed Vol fan knows.

That, I guess, is what aggravates me. I don't know that it happened or not. Could it? Sure. Is it a fact? Not demonstrated to be based on available evidence.

seeing as how apparently every big name player took some money from someone, there are expectations of course, but apparently that was how it was then and hopefully its cleaned more so now

Practically all the "blue-chippers" are accustomed to special treatment, all the way from Pee-Wee through college. This is NEWS?

Question: if this is true about kids basically being on salary, why did A.J. Green need $1000 for his jersey? Seems like he would have had plenty of other opportunities to earn "free" money without risking the sale of something like that.

Would you turn down $1000 bucks for a jersey?

I don't care if I had $5 or $500,000 in my checking account, that's quick easy money.

I thought Chuck Webb's sophomore season and college career ended after injuring his knee in the 2nd game?

I don't know when it stopped....or if it has stopped...but in the 60s and 70s, football players got free tickets. They would turn the tickets into the Ticket Office or wherever and the tickets would be replaced with moolah.

Magic money and this went on with players who never saw game day play.
