That's a decent component of the insurgency in a nutshell.
Of course, that's simplifying things and not addressing the beehive of Shia/Sunni issues that enflamed Iraq and had little to nothing to do with the US going in there. That was an inevitability.
From guys that know a hell of a lot more about the SOF community... he's seen as a caustic person and a braggart. Not to mention a liar. He broke a cardinal rule amongst SOF guys and that is simply talking about what he did and how they operate... and profited from it.
Regardless, he's a complex guy behind the facade of a simple redneck persona. He denied having PTSD but a lot of his comments and his contradictory (even within the same interview) comments shed light on his internal struggle between decisions he made that he likely has kept to himself.
In the end he's a morally conflicted person that was thrust into a very difficult position. I respect that. He did his job and got a lot of Marines home. I respect that. He then devoted his time to helping out other vets with PTSD. I really respect that.
That, however, doesn't alleviate him from criticism.

Sarah Palin, I love it:
"God bless our troops, especially our snipers," she wrote. "Hollywood leftists: while caressing shiny plastic trophies you exchange among one another while spitting on the graves of freedom fighters who allow you to what you do, just realize the rest of America knows you're not fit to shine Chris Kyle's combat boots."

Not that I agree with Sarah Palin but she said God Bless both, but due to both you can get on a message board and pick apart a statement for no good reason.
This is a point I'm not sure people fully understand when they attempt to toss it out like a trump card all so often. I appreciate our freedom and freedom of speech, and all the military does in defense of it.
I do not think what we have been doing in the middle east the past 13 years has been primarily in the defense of our freedom as American citizens. That is not to say I do not respect soldiers or their jobs, they have little to no control over their mission. On the other hand, I do not respect you for trying to characterize me as not being appreciative of freedom. So your emotionally charged opinion is not relevant.
And here's a less sarcastic point. If you're truly afraid of losing your individual liberties, I would be keeping a much closer eye on our federal government and military than the guy's warring over patches of sand across the ocean.
