I'm a huge Dale Sr. fan, but who on earth cares if Childress lets someone else drive the car? I'm sure Sr could care less if anyone else drives the three. Let 'em go for it if he makes to NASCAR. I hope Wrangler and Goodwrench both sponsor the kid too if he has what it takes. It's a freaking number.
Right, no one said much about Jr. not keeping the eight.
I remember after Fireball Roberts died, it was announced his number 22 would be retired. 22 wasn't used for a few years, but then it came back into use. Apparently it was never meant to be permanent. With 00 and 01 - 09 there are 110 numbers available, so it wouldn't take too long to use up most of the available numbers, since around 60 numbers are issued at present.
I am huge Sr. fan also, and it doesn't bother me any if he drives the 3. But I do believe there are fans out there that it would bother. It wouldn't be such a big deal if Childress himself didn't promise the fans that no one would drive the 3 again. So this, he brought upon himself. That is my opinion. I know Nascar doesn't retire numbers. Childress pays for the #3 every season and chooses not to use it. So he would have the rights. But he did make the promise to the fans for those who don't remember. It was never officially retired.
I may be wrong, but I thought Childress left it open that if it felt right or circumstances were right, he would put the #3 on a car again. I think he may have said it would not go on a black car again. Many thought he was implying that he would use the 3 if Dale, Jr were to drive it in the future.
I'm not sure his exact words on the matter, but at the time I thought he was implying that if it was ever to be used again, it would be by Jr.
Dale Sr.'s Wiki page used to have Richard's exact quotes to the fans on it in the #3 section. But when I look now, it has been changed and it mentions that the #3 will be used again.
