Childress' grandson driving No. 3

I don't see it as that big a deal. Dillon is running in a regional series, lots of cars do and have used #3 in smaller levels, particularly non-NASCAR series. It will/would become a hot issue at the Nationwide level.

The numbers are assigned to car owners by Nascar, not to drivers, so it would be Childress's right to use the number. NASCAR is the "owner" of the numbers, if a team dissolves, the number goes back to NASCAR.

No big deal here, He is running in the Camping World East circuit, Not the Nextel Cup Series. That is not even the Nationwide Series. When he moves on up to Nextel and tries to keep the number, a lot of Fans will put a price on his head then.

Last time I checked the number hasn't been retired by anybody for anybody.

I'm a huge Dale Sr. fan, but who on earth cares if Childress lets someone else drive the car? I'm sure Sr could care less if anyone else drives the three. Let 'em go for it if he makes to NASCAR. I hope Wrangler and Goodwrench both sponsor the kid too if he has what it takes. It's a freaking number.

Right, no one said much about Jr. not keeping the eight.

Jr's still alive, so I think it's a little different, but it didn't bother me any. No one ever convinced me he's still not excited about all the new revenue he's bringing in with a new number and color scheme.

Are we going to unofficially retire the 43 when the Petty's hang it up in their ownership? What about when jeffy poo gordon hangs it up? Gonna retire the 24 then? No one better be driving Cale's number. No one retired the 7 or 28 after Alan and Davey's way too early deaths. They're numbers. Let 'em whine if they're going too.

I remember after Fireball Roberts died, it was announced his number 22 would be retired. 22 wasn't used for a few years, but then it came back into use. Apparently it was never meant to be permanent. With 00 and 01 - 09 there are 110 numbers available, so it wouldn't take too long to use up most of the available numbers, since around 60 numbers are issued at present.

Exactly. It would've been too weird for Harvick to just step into the #3 in his first race, but by the time this kid makes NASCAR it will likely have been ten years. What better way to honor Dale's passing than having a black and silver #3 return to Daytona?

I am huge Sr. fan also, and it doesn't bother me any if he drives the 3. But I do believe there are fans out there that it would bother. It wouldn't be such a big deal if Childress himself didn't promise the fans that no one would drive the 3 again. So this, he brought upon himself. That is my opinion. I know Nascar doesn't retire numbers. Childress pays for the #3 every season and chooses not to use it. So he would have the rights. But he did make the promise to the fans for those who don't remember. It was never officially retired.

It doesnt bother me at all either. I just thought Id see how everyone else feels about it. Im sure theres some die-hard Dale fans out there who think the #3 should never be used again. Although the car does have a striking resemblance: black side panel, white 3 w/ red trim?

I may be wrong, but I thought Childress left it open that if it felt right or circumstances were right, he would put the #3 on a car again. I think he may have said it would not go on a black car again. Many thought he was implying that he would use the 3 if Dale, Jr were to drive it in the future.

I'm not sure his exact words on the matter, but at the time I thought he was implying that if it was ever to be used again, it would be by Jr.

Dale Sr.'s Wiki page used to have Richard's exact quotes to the fans on it in the #3 section. But when I look now, it has been changed and it mentions that the #3 will be used again.

I'm with Broyles line of thinking. I thought I remember hearing Childress say something along the lines of the number will only be used again when the time is right. I want to say I remember the talking heads bringing up the issue of there are only so many numbers to go around in NASCAR, there's no way that the number could be retired forever.

This might be our lamest discussion yet. What I really want to know is when we're going to see the 69 car.

He has been racing the #3 on dirt for a couple of years now at Volunteer Speedway. He and his brother (who also races) are good kids, very well mannered.
