Chaz Coleman status?

I agree, if this is mental health related Tony is kind of sleezy for reporting on it.
I called it out multiple times and he said nothing, he just didn’t mention mental health yesterday after talking about it Tuesday and defending it because “there shouldn’t be stigma” around it. He missed the point that it’s not his or our business to air other people’s mental health issues, or rumors of them. Really poor taste.

I knew a kid who committed suicide because his parents told him his grades weren't good enough so he should study and work and not to come home for Thanksgiving

I don't know what Chaz Coleman's issues are but trying to tell him to "suck it up" has risks also. There is a large part of life that isn't SEC football and His plan for Chaz may not be football.

The young man is talented enough, hopefully, to miss a little Spring ball and still be an impact player in the Fall. It's not optimal for football but there's a lot more than football in life.
Here is the problem with that statement. If he did not have this talent that everyone speaks of and had to exist in real life, how long do you think an employer would give them to "find themselves"? If it is about greed, then he will bolt to the first school that offers him more and all effort put into his development will be for another school. If he can't handle getting paid millions of dollars to move away from home for a few years without pining for home, he will be Boo Carter 2.0 and will want to hang more with his family and crew than focus on football. With the money he is making, he could buy his family a house and move them here while he plays for UT. It isn't like he is right out of high school, he played for Penn State last year. Unfortunately, teenagers that play sports college will have to learn to grow up and be ready faster or fall by the wayside now. It is already stressful and hard; throw in the lure of spending obscene amounts of money and be expected to want to work hard to get better at your craft. Those who screamed "NIL will help sports get better and help the kids" will now understand why those of us who protested felt the way we do. DO NOT count on anyone truly even being a VFN (Vol For NOW) little less anyone ever being a true VFL ever again.

I have been a sports fanatic since I was 6 years old (and I am OLD) and it has reached the point that it is no longer entertaining to watch sports of any kind. The same reason that I cannot stand any professional sport has now poisoned and corrupted "amateur" sports. Very soon, the only attachment I have with my alma mater will be my diploma and my wardrobe of multiple clothing items colored orange and white.

Enough already !!!!

If he is homesick and unhappy, it does not excuse missing practice. Especially given he is being paid to be here.
This is when you stop the automatic paycheck deposits. If you're not coming to work, you get docked.
He can be unhappy and go to practice at the same time. Then leave if you don't want to be here.
I'm sick of these fragile egos. We don't need another distraction like last season's team.
Coleman either needs to buy in 1000% or Heupel needs to send him home.

If he were injured, would we be having this conversation?

The question is: is mental health a health issue. I believe it is.

Then if he's having a mental health issue that's keeping him from playing, it's just like an injury we risk with any player.

If he'd broken his leg would we be saying "he's just not tough enough to play on it anyway and he needs to suck it up because we're paying him....."

Or maybe some of you doubted it was real when Hendon Hooker tore his leg up? Maybe he was just a slacker and should've played because we needed him?

If you can't see the health issue, it's not real... Right?

Happy Valley is just a 3 hour drive from Warren, Ohio, compared to 8 hours for Knoxville. As a Family Physician, I can attest to the fact that major life changes, even good ones, can have a profound impact on mental health. if Chaz is battling depression or mental health issue, it is NOT a reflection on his character or toughness. The young man needs our prayers.
i doubt any of us has enough information to make a judgement.

Not everyone is a troublemaker that’s a got problems so you can’t treat everyone the same. He’s a young adult and he has to grow up, but that’s no reason to be hard on him. I’m sure he’s not the only player that this has ever happened to.

Didn't claim the young man is a troublemaker, but if he simply says "hey, I want my gig at UT to work", than you just go and do it. If not, the UT Synchronized Swimming team needs some athletes. (and sorry if anyone thinks this is harsh, but my God people, this is rock'em sock'em hit'em in the head FOOTBALL.) You Gotta have the right mind set to survive and be effective. This must occur before you get on the field, and this kid can't seem to get out of his dorm room.

This is the problem with paying children this type of money.

It wouldn’t be nearly the conversation if only on scholarship.
Would this be a problem if he had a non contact injury to his leg keeping him off the field or do those things just happen sometimes?

Do you simply believe mental health doesn't matter and can be ignored as a problem?

I said it wouldn’t be nearly the conversation if simply on scholarship.

I didn’t say anything about mental health, only age, developmental maturity and money. Even that is a stretch connecting age and maturity, i.e. children.

Numerous pro athletes have had mental health struggles also which kept them off the field.

It's not about age or money. It's about having respect for mental health issues as health issues.

You’re clearly hung up on the mental health aspect/possibility here. And that’s okay. I’m simply expressing my perspective on the larger NIL issue.

Well, what did you mean by "this is the problem with paying children this kind of money?"

It seems you think it relates to this issue because of age though issues happen with older pros that are very similar.

If you just hate NIL prices, you're fighting the free market economy principles America is proud of.

He is not a child. He's an adult. This isn't middle school football.
He cant even legally have a beer.

The male brain isn’t fully developed until 26 or so. I’m certain there is a neuro on the board who can elaborate.

If kiddo has mental health issues beyond just maturity opportunities, thats another story.

I didn't realize there was a thread on this, or I would have posted this here. From the 12th practice thread:

If Chaz's experience at Tennessee plays out similar to what happened with Nico and Boo, it's on the head coach. Character evaluation is just as important as evaluating athleticism. We will never get where we want to be if we keep throwing money at players who do nothing but hold us back.

Personally, I felt like Chaz Coleman was overrated during portal season. Not that he doesn't have the potential to be a really good player, he certainly does, but seeing everyone treat him like a slam dunk, can't miss impact prospect when he only had 1 sack in 2025 was surprising to me. But that's what happens with former 5-star recruits. Everyone just assumes they're a future 1st round pick. Nobody will be surprised if he comes in and has 8 or 9 sacks this season, but we also shouldn't be surprised if he only has 2 or 3. JMO.
So you are saying a coach is supposed to know what an 18 year old is thinking!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. You name Nico and Boo. How about all the successful players with great character that have been signed by CJH. No coach is batting 1000%

From what what I understand he isn’t a malcontent like Boo or Nico, hom sick and some mental health struggles. Also, if there were previous issues do you really think Knowles would have been anted him here?
3.5 million reasons to get over it.. almost anyone else would die for that opportunity!
