Chavis.. Coaching Birmingham

I remember those infamous 3rd and long schemes Chavis called that seemed to never work. I hoped for 3rd and 2 rather than a 3rd and 22. Had a better chance to stop it. Not sure why he hasn't just retired but maybe he just can't give up the game. Hope he is not in a financial situation is why he is still coaching.

Send heat on 3rd and long.

Seems like UT has always had issues getting off the field on 3rd down. The good ole mustang defense. 😑.

I hung out w Chief @ a couple of times @ an annual Rotary Club golf tourney in Spring Hill/Franklin area. He had some stories about Saban and other coaches. He opened up a bit after one of the latter seasons during his era @ UT. He has us al laughing as he was so ticked that he had a stellar defense but the offense couldn’t get a first down. I can’t recall if it was the 05 or 06 season. 08 was his last yr @ TN so I don’t think it was that yr.

You know we blast Chavis but he had some outstanding moments also. I recall in the 2003 game at Bama, they had 1st and 1 (yes due to a penalty it was first and 1. If Bama gets the first down, the game is over. They don’t. Tennessee gets the ball, converts 4th & 18 I believe and ties the game. Then wins in 5th OT.

The defense led the 1998 season. The 2005 team had a NC defense but a bottom feeder offense(thanks Randy Sanders) There were other great moments too. The offense blew a few games in those days too

Rather watch the CFL. Always enjoyed watching the CFL and Arena in the summer because both were different. Sadly, the AFL is no longer operation.

The CFL is awesome and a really great thing to watch because, as you mentioned, it’s different than NCAA/NFL football. I doubt that the USFL ever gets its sea legs, but it certainly won't be this season where every single game is played in Birmingham.

CLOSE! It was Casey Clausen completing a pass on 4th and 19.

Defense didn’t get Fulmer fired. The offenses in 2005 & 2008 got him fired. Horrible
And the ****** recruiting in the later years. It was like he was granting favors with some scholarships - aka the anderson kid from florence ala. Never understood that one.

All SEC Ole Miss and 49er All Pro Linebacker Patrick Willis from Bruceton, TN did everything he could to attend UT but crawl a mile through broken glass on his belly. UT told him to kick rocks and the rest of the story is history.

Well, good to know that someone's watching that league.
i've enjoyed it so far. i've watched a few of the games. the production is good and it's available on multiple channels and apps. More football and in the spring and summer is good with me.

IIRC the 2005 defense was ranked around 12th in the country and that after being hung out to dry by the offense all season. The offense couldn't score at a hookers convention.

I think he was a very good DC on those 90's teams. I just never understood his 3rd long package that seemed to never work. By the time he left for LSU and thereafter he just could never find the magic again. He had some great players and to his credit used them well.

As much as third and long sucked sometimes the man really could coach a defense. That 08 team was bad but had an amazing defense. Our 06 and 05 teams both had elite defenses. We did it all in 98 because of the defense

That '98 defense had a few pros on that team...Makes being a DC an easier job...Even for JC

Agreed. So did Kirby’s this yr. And Pruitts in ‘17. All of Sabans NC defenses had alot of pros on it. It’s pretty common that great players make coaches good.

He was only the greatest linebacker walking the face of the earth at one time.

Chief fell in love with Daniel Brooks who was a 5* but ended up never playing too much.

That happens with recruiting sometimes. I played HS ball with a guy who a TN coach simply fell in love with him at first sight. Tennessee promoted him to All State and all kinds of other awards. If they'd had star ratings then, he'd been a high 4 star at least. And because Tennessee was all over him, here came all the others recruiting him. We all wondered what these coaches saw. He never played much SEC ball but moved down to smaller level after a couple years.
