Send heat on 3rd and long.I remember those infamous 3rd and long schemes Chavis called that seemed to never work. I hoped for 3rd and 2 rather than a 3rd and 22. Had a better chance to stop it. Not sure why he hasn't just retired but maybe he just can't give up the game. Hope he is not in a financial situation is why he is still coaching.
Rather watch the CFL. Always enjoyed watching the CFL and Arena in the summer because both were different. Sadly, the AFL is no longer operation.
You know we blast Chavis but he had some outstanding moments also. I recall in the 2003 game at Bama, they had 1st and 1 (yes due to a penalty it was first and 1. If Bama gets the first down, the game is over. They don’t. Tennessee gets the ball, converts 4th & 18 I believe and ties the game. Then wins in 5th OT.
The defense led the 1998 season. The 2005 team had a NC defense but a bottom feeder offense(thanks Randy Sanders) There were other great moments too. The offense blew a few games in those days too
And the ****** recruiting in the later years. It was like he was granting favors with some scholarships - aka the anderson kid from florence ala. Never understood that one.
IIRC the 2005 defense was ranked around 12th in the country and that after being hung out to dry by the offense all season. The offense couldn't score at a hookers convention.Seems like UT has always had issues getting off the field on 3rd down. The good ole mustang defense..
I hung out w Chief @ a couple of times @ an annual Rotary Club golf tourney in Spring Hill/Franklin area. He had some stories about Saban and other coaches. He opened up a bit after one of the latter seasons during his era @ UT. He has us al laughing as he was so ticked that he had a stellar defense but the offense couldn’t get a first down. I can’t recall if it was the 05 or 06 season. 08 was his last yr @ TN so I don’t think it was that yr.

As much as third and long sucked sometimes the man really could coach a defense. That 08 team was bad but had an amazing defense. Our 06 and 05 teams both had elite defenses. We did it all in 98 because of the defenseSeems like UT has always had issues getting off the field on 3rd down. The good ole mustang defense..

All SEC Ole Miss and 49er All Pro Linebacker Patrick Willis from Bruceton, TN did everything he could to attend UT but crawl a mile through broken glass on his belly. UT told him to kick rocks and the rest of the story is history.
