He was a pretty influential political tastemaker, especially with young conservatives and young conservatives on college campuses. That is a demo that is "supposed" to be left, and he had achieved success in showing people an alternate viewpoint.

In some ways, having the influence to do that is more powerful than being a sitting lawmaker. I saw a clip from an interview he did with Dave Rubin several years ago, and Rubin asked him if he was going to run for office. He said probably not because he thought he could influence more people doing what he was doing. He was probably right.

Before the flight, the vice president and second lady will join Kirk’s family and several of his close friends in Salt Lake City, the source said. Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed Wednesday during a campus event at Utah Valley University. He was 31.
