CFP expected to do away with conference champ auto bids to top 4 bye’s.

The problem is How do you judge who the best teams are for the postseason when the regular season is so watered down? I don’t even watch pro sports anymore. Teams are resting players In order to just win a enough marginal games to get into the playoffs. Ohio St was ready to throw in the towell once they were a lock for the playoffs, but that skews the data for everybody else’s ranking.

I don't think the need to get rid of auto bids, but just seed teams based on where they're ranked. The big mistake was having the top 4 conference champs as the top 4 seeds. I think it makes for interesting matchups to have 1 group of 5 team in there.

I don't think they are doing away with auto-bids. They are simply changing the seeding format to where conference champs are not guaranteed the top four seeds. The four P4 conference champs as well as the highest rated G5 team will still automatically qualify.
You’re right, just not the bye’s. My mistake

I personally think this is what it should have been all along. The BEST 12 teams should get in.

It's past time to do away with the conference championship games. If they don't get you an auto playoff bid, then there is no benefit to playing an extra game that you could lose.

Doing that would level the playing field between the P4 conferences and Notre Dabe, too. If you want a conference championship, just award it to the team with the best regular season record in conference. If two or more teams tie for that record, award co championships.

I agree somewhat, except the broadcast networks will push to keep them for the revenue. Also, imagine if say the Big Ten comes down to a number 2 Ohio St playing a number 12 Oregon...Oregon wins and they are in the CFP...Oregon loses and they are out. Too much drama in those type scenarios for the networks to give up the conference title games.

Here is what last year would have looked like under this format

We would have thumped SMU in Neyland. Got UGA with no Beck on a neutral site...love our odds there. Then ran into OhSt or Texas...probably bowed out there, but a top 4 finish would have been stellar.

Just get RID of conference "championship" games all together. It's nothing but an opportunity to have one of your conference teams take another L. Greed is going to really bite the SEC in the ass sooner than later.

I'm guessing the title meant auto-byes, not bids.

The sad part of this is, they had to actually try that ridiculous model to see that it wouldn't work. I want to get paid a lot of money to make poor decisions. 95% of college football fans knew that wouldn't be fair.
It seems that “f-ing it up” is a marketing strategy. Controversy gets people talking, I guess.

So keeping the "you get in if you win your conference and are among the highest 4" - you just are not guaranteed a bye. That is better.

I know some want to do away with the conference championship games - but the catch is that if you rely only on the regular season games what do you do with you have a 3- or 4-way tie for first? Someone is not in, and the selection is subjective not objective. Folks will still be complaining when a # 5 in the Big 10 is taken over a # 4 in the SEC, etc.

Personally, it has to become one of the following:

1. The best 12 teams with well stated selection criteria that doesn't change to fit whatever conference folks believe is the best. OR
2. A tournament of champions where the top 12 conference champs are in with no exceptions. In other words, a team must be a champion in their conference to participate.

And yes, I know # 2 does not get the best 12 teams - but it is OBJECTIVE criteria - not SUBJECTIVE as to who a set of folks 'think' are the best 12.

More than likely we are just going to have to concede that it is what it is and as long as the obvious top 2 teams are in the 12 and bucketed such that they could met in the finals - it will have to be okay.

Yet another rule change after we get hosed by not being able to host in Neyland last year.

A Tennessee Tradition: rule changes after we get screwed
