Long story short: Droid Razr Gorilla Glass is not dog-bite proof.

I have heard that there are local repair options, but I have had trouble locating them. Also, it was suggested that I order a replacement screen, but I'm a little leery of cracking open the case.

Advice?

It costs about $40-$60 to do this repair plus the cost of the part(s) which vary greatly based on the phone. If the lcd panel is not damaged, you can buy just the lens. Repair instructions are usually on you tube. If you are unsure prob best not to do it yourself. A lot of times getting a refurb replacement phone is a better option. If you can't find a cell phone repair shop, a lot of jewelry stores do these repairs too

Hardest part of working on many cell phones today is just getting them apart. Once open, they are usually just a mainboard with some cables that run to various items like your screen, digitizer, camera, etc. Unplugging a cable is simple if you've ever worked with computers or electronics before.

Good thing now is there's usually a video somewhere on the internet of someone taking one apart.

Is the LCD messed up? Or just the glass on top? If it's just the glass, you need a digitizer. If you can get just that, it's fairly cheap (amazon, ebay). Finding someone to put it on might be difficult. If you buy the whole screen with LCD, that would make your repair much easier. Open phone, disconnect the lcd and digitizer cable, plug in new one, and reassemble the phone.

Unfortunately, from what I've seen, Motorola smartphones are generally on the harder side to open compared to others. Try to find a disassembly video and see what you think.
