They may be overrated when you consider the entire season as a whole. But we get them week 1 with no injuries, with probably more unanswered questions than any team in football. New HC, new systems, no real QB leader, an OL that might be good but might be terrible. A seconday full of holes going up against a QB that is widely considered top tier. Their HC needs wins badly to save his job. Our HC is brand new and even if UT goes 0-8 again in the SEC, he knows he aint going nowhere.

they may be overrated by the end of the season, but they have a better than good chance of counting UT as one of their Ws.

WVa is likely overrated. That doesn't mean they won't beat the Vols. I wish it weren't so but even if WVa is significantly overrated, and UT underrated, the Vols lack depth at several critical positions, namely the defensive front. If the Vols can't get pressure on Grier without bringing a blitz, it is going to be a long afternoon for us. I am hoping they can, but until I see a competitive team actually play a game, I am a skeptic. Next year I think our fortunes will improve. This year, a 7 win season should get CJP a coach of the year award.

These guys must have not gotten the warning that we were given.

College football predictions: Nation's most overrated, playoff picks, 2018 Heisman favorites

Most overrated team
West Virginia: I'm in on Will Grier, but there are too many other questions -- including what WVU's offense looks like if he gets banged up -- to have on board with the pollsters in saying the Mountaineers are a top-20 team. To me, there are two or three teams in the Big 12 that I'd take over West Virginia, and while there's a great chance to put together a solid record in September and October, I think the November schedule will leave them right in the middle of the Big 12 standings and not in the top 25 of the polls. -- Chip Patterson (also Tom Fornelli, Barton Simmons)

Your logic is poor, MWA. "We have a lot of unknowns, therefore they're better than us."

That'd be like saying, "they rolled a 4, we haven't rolled yet, therefore they've got a higher roll than us."

That's not how it goes.

It goes like this: "We have a ton of unknowns, therefore there's no way of telling who's going to win."

That's how it goes.

Kirk is an idiot when it comes to WVU. He don't like us. Y'all whine about Pat Fordes.......we get the same treatment too. That's what's fun about our upcoming game. We're all middle-of-the-pack conference teams, trying to get up to the top, culturally all the same, just on opposite side of the hill, and both love our effing college football. It's all good. Let's have a beer at the deer huntin camp.

THIS we can agree on. The difference between both our middle of the pack teams, however, is that I believe based on our new coach that Vols are going up after this season. I cant say the same about Dana and WVU (though Grier could save him). God help us if you had played us last season when Grier was live. Meanwhile, we can both enjoy the game and best wishes to the other team for the rest of the season - Good luck from Sunday on!

Having so many unknowns just days before a big non-conference game is almost certainly a very bad thing. you're hard pressed to find an example where a team had so many questions and most of those questions were answered in the afirmative.

The point of my response was to say that WV being overrated has no bearing on how UT should think of them given UTs current position in the pecking order of the SEC and most recent history and that WE the fans are quite possibly overrating the Vols to a greater degree than WV is being overrated.

There are enough big negative questions about our QB and OL that this football game will come down to one thing.... will our very underexperienced secondary get shredded to pieces by a good QB. If the answer is yes, I do not believe we have the fire power to overcome it. If somehow they stop the passing game then UT has a good chance to win if they can manage to stop the run which they couldnt do at all last year with basically the same players and the addition of brand new freshmen.

BEWARE...You might see a duck pull a truck.

1st play of the game with WV at the 20 with the ball.

There's the snap and the QB drops back to pass.

King Tut is fighting 2 O linemen and pushing both of them backwards, what a beast he is.

King Tut breaks through both of them and SPLAT..Down goes the WV QB flat on his back with King Tut right on top of him.

WV trainers and doctors are running out on te field to check on their QB.

We'll take a commercial break during this injury and be right back.

We're back folks and the QB for WV is being loaded into a ambulance but WAIT, look at this, I've never seen this before after just 1 play in a game.

Thousands of WV fans are admitting defeat and are leaving the stadium after just 1 play in the game.

This is just crazy my friends.

The backup QB for WV does NOT seem to want to come on the field either.

The WV coach is going nuts and now calls a timeout to try to figure something out.

We're back from another commercial and nobody is going to believe this, the entire WV football team has left the field.

Info we're getting from the WV locker room is that the WV AD met with the head coach and the coach quit right on the spot and left the stadium.

None of the assistant coaches want the HC job and the word is that they can't find enough players that want to return and face the Tennessee team anymore.

I've never seen anything like this in my life.

Tennessee gets the WIN after just 1 play in the game.

Score.....King Tut and the Tennessee Big Orange Vols....1.

WV quitters 0.

The entire field is now Tennessee Orange as the entire Team and thousands of their fans celebrate and dance.

VFL...GBO!!!
You left out the part where after the injury they hook up the starting QB to a secret IV and give him a snoot full of the magic FOOSEBALL dust and trot him back out, like popeye high on on Spinach ...it's happened before

they can still be the most overrated team in the country, and still win Saturday. just sayin'....
I don't think they'll be exposed as overrated until later in the year. It is entirely possible they enter November 8-0 and ranked very highly. Within the first 8 their toughest game is probably @ NC State or against Kansas St at home. Then they could very easily lose their last 4 (@ Texas, TCU, @ Oklahoma St, Oklahoma). Schedule is very back-loaded.

Tennessee and Iowa State can lower the boom on West Virginia also. I can see both Tennessee and Iowa State being 8-4.

Now that they are over rated it won’t mean much when we blast them.

I get it. They are still West Virginia. Why did anyone think they were good in the 1st place? It’s West Virginia.

All this will be said about Fl and Ga when we blast them two too.

We will get credit when we beat the gumps and all burn.

2018 is looking good.

You're still confusing "unknown" with "not good," MWA.

And sure, sometimes the unknown takes a bite of you. But sometimes, it thrills you. And you just never know which it's gonna be until it arrives.

If it makes you feel any better, a lot of the things that are unknown to you and me, they're already known by our head coach and his assistants. They don't seem to be crying or gnashing their teeth. So maybe we're gonna be okay. Let's see how it plays out rather than hitting the Eeyore button in advance. :)

I'm not into declaring an opponent as overrated. After we whoop their azz, I will be declaring what a great team they are.
Exactly. If we win- "they are a solid top 20 team, its on to Atlanta for us!"

Come to think of it, if we lose - "on the bright side, that's a top 20 team we lost to.."

Yep, CBS writer is an idiot. That's a damn fine WVU team we are playing Saturday.

The idea that WVU may be overrated may make you feel good BEFORE the game, but after the game, if you win, you’ll be trying to convince the rest of the country how good WVU is, and because you beat them, UT is really good too. Can’t have it both ways.

To me, WVU is the perfect opponent for UT. WV has just enough of a good reputation that if you lose, it’ll be because they’re a respectable, solid team with a great QB. If you win, it’ll still be seen as an impressive upset and will jumpstart the Pruitt era with a signature win right out the gates.

I’m not predicting the upset but wouldn’t be surprised to see UT win.

Sure we can have it both ways. You just watch us, mister. :)

Win or lose, they are by gosh the best team in the B12 this year, and I hope they beat Oklahoma to prove it after losing to us. :)

Based on what I've seen and heard if the Vols go 0-8 in the SEC CJP will be on suicide watch. He's wound up pretty tight and I don't really think he considers his job security much.

You know what would be even better? Pocket tees where the pocket is on the belly. Easier access plus better visibility. Handy and hilarious.

Ha, well the historical trend certainly indicates unknown=not good at the very least.

The brand new coach isnt gonna cry or gnash his teeth much. It's his job to "sell" things. I dont recall Dooley ot Butch gnashing teeth much, except when they didnt like the honest questions being asked to them by the media. But when talking about their team, it was of course all good news to report.

Furthermore, I do think there were a fair number on the staff and in the media that were gnashing their teeth in spring practice at how awful things were.

Could that have changed in the precious few practices and scrimages that have happened since the end of spring ball? Perhaps. Miracles can and do happen. I am capable of being wrong, tho. I never predicted 0-8 last year.
