Nice of them to think so... but seems a little high to me.
Depends on how you look at it. Do I think they're the ninth best team in the country? No. However, there aren't nine teams that have better resumes at this point.

You've got that right. They've come up big in big games... that is, since losing to Butler and UNC.

the big test will come at OSU.
I'm not sure that game will be a fair indicator. I think there are only about 7-8 teams in the country that would have any realistic chance of winning in Columbus.

i don't disagree that it's going to be a tough place to play. i also don't expect them to win, but i expect them to play tough and keep it close.

i find there are similarities between Matta and OSU and Pearl and UT:

1. neither were expected to do much last year and both overachieved
2. both are second year coaches
3. both had #2 seeds in the tourney
4. both had very strong recruiting classes
5. both seem like very very passionate coaches

There is , however, one huge difference:

Matta has Greg Oden.

do you think we'll reach a point here where we can draw the guys that.

the Durants, Odens, OJ Mayos...

the guys that are there for a year, because they have to be.

I don't know, but I'm not sure we want those guys. It's a huge advantage to get a class that will play 3-4 years together, and having a guy who plays just 1 year takes scholarships away from others who'd stay a lot longer.

Good point. That game is a freebie for the Vols. A learning experience that could turn into a huge win, but I can only hope they play hard and keep OSU honest.

I'd much rather beat Vandy and Auburn. The Vandy game will be very difficult b/c they'll be hungry, and our frosh haven't played there before - weird court set up with benches on the end could make it tough for them to adjust.

Concerning the TOSU game, it's nothing to lose, everything to gain from this game. We aren't expected to win at Ohio State, so if we lose, we are supposed to and it's not a bad loss. But if we win, it just adds to our tourney resume.

I would also rather see us beat Vandy and Auburn. With our inexperienced team, the schedule sets up how we need it to with the tougher games later in the year. But we need to take advantage of the early schedule - Mississippi St, @Vandy, @Auburn, South Carolina, @Ole Miss, @Kentucky, and Georgia. We need a good record coming out of the first seven SEC games, because it definitely gets tougher. The last nine are tough - @Florida, LSU, Vandy, Kentucky, @South Carolina, Alabama, @Arkansas, Florida, @Georgia.

Yeah, bringing in Carmelo Anthony just killed Syracuse. Marvin Williams really hurt UNC as well.

Schedule or talent?

IMO, a little of both. Their schedule is ranked 66th, which isn't horrible for mostly OOC games. I expect them to have a decent ACC season, making the NCAA tournament, and being bounced early. hat will have more insight.
