Dobbs on list of top QBs to watch for '17 Draft

A snippet .....

"Joshua Dobbs’ ability to be a dynamic college quarterback isn’t in question. That’s been answered.

What remains in question, though, is what kind of prospect Tennessee’s senior quarterback is for the NFL level.

The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Dobbs is a fantastic athlete for the quarterback position, and his film against elite SEC athletes proves that beyond a reasonable doubt. Dobbs also draws justifiably high praise for his intelligence, character and leadership skills."

The list....

The top 10 QBs we'll be talking about before the 2017 NFL Draft - CBSSports.com

8. Josh Dobbs, senior, Tennessee: No character issues here. As an aerospace engineering major, Dobbs is one heck of a quarterback -- and if you have to be told -- he is also a top-notch student.

The Vols will be favored to win the SEC East. Dobbs is the biggest reason on a team with 16 other returning starters. Coming off the worst completion percentage of his career (59.6), Dobbs’ intangibles are more important than ever. He didn’t pout when Tennessee started 2-3 and blew games against Oklahoma, Florida and Arkansas. Dobbs will have to show scouts he can throw downfield. Only 17 of his completions last year went for at least 25 yards. His 671 rushing yards led all SEC quarterbacks.

If this ends up being right, it means we probably developed a downfield passing game and had a great season, so I'm all for it

We have been, it just never connects.

On the outside, yes. But in the middle of the field, 15-20 yard routes, Dobbs is actually pretty accurate on those throws IMO. He's made a lot of very good throws on those intermediate routes. It's the others that give him trouble....the go routes and occasionally the simple pitch and catch throws, even some horizontal WR screens that he throws low.

All that being said, wanted to share the article/list.....it's great seeing our QB listed as one of the best in the country.

Not really a surprise. I see him going in the middle rounds.

I agree. I could see 4th or 5th rd, perhaps even earlier. Depends on who needs a QB next year and how much Josh progresses as a passer, especially downfield. As Ainge said today on his show, it doesn't much matter if Dobbs checks the box on every other tangible and intangible NFL teams want. The first thing teams are gonna look for is how well he throws the ball, that's paramount, and if he can't pass that test, all the other stuff is diminished and fairly inconsequential.

I think another factor to weigh is the recent downturn of the free agent QB market, essentially forcing teams to draft a QB higher than they normally would because there just isn't that much talent out there. Much like this years draft, theres no way in hell those two QB's should have gone that high given their talent levels. If we can project to next year and predict which teams will need a QB it could give us an idea where Josh might be drafted. He may end up being drafted higher than he should based on team needs, but I just don't see him being a 1st/2nd rounder.

After Watson, none of those names appear very enticing for NFL types? Dobbs could be the 3rd QB taken and still be a later round pick.

Yes, sir. You have to be accurate in the NFL. No substitute for that...no matter the intangibles. That said, he has next year plus a couple years on the pine to work on it. He'd be worth a late round flyer IMO.

Dobbs would be drafted even if we have a replay of last year. If we develop a downfield passing game (which I think happens with the emergence of Preston Williams) then we win the SEC championship, make the playoffs, and Dobbs goes high in the draft.

CBS also did a top 10 for seniors and top 10 for junior draft prospects...was expecting to see Barnett on the Juniors list but he wasn't.

Myles Garrett was #2

Also saw Carl Lawson on one of those lists. He's yet to do anything despite being All-SEC for 2 years now.

If we don't develop a better passing game.

But remember at this time last year everyone was talking about the o-line and how weak it was. Then the season starts and the o-line becomes a strength. We run at will on everyone and do a much better job protecting the passer.

If the passing game improves next season as much as the o-line improved last year then I believe Dobbs goes a lot higher than middle rounds.

It all depends on if the passing game develops.

I wouldn't take this as gospel. I looked at their list of top 10 QBs from last year and they didn't even have Carson Wentz (the eventual #2 overall pick).

Yeah..I actually was trying to point out how flawed their rankings were. They also had the Iowa cb in top 3 for seniors and I know several scouting sites aren't very high on him. Cam Sutton should have a better year and will be in top 3 CBs by next spring.

If we repeat last year, he might be drafted, but he won't be one of the first 10 QBs taken. Being athletic doesn't put him on the level of Kevin Hogan or Dak Prescott. I don't know what you mean by "high," but I'd say that's pretty unlikely regardless

Yes and no. Agree that he can improve his draft position if he improves his downfield throwing and overall accuracy. And if the right team that runs the right system is in a position to pick him earlier.

However, there are a handful of guys who are already more accurate, more polished throwing the ball projected to go higher than him that he's gotta jump over. Gonna be a tall order IMO. And if he doesn't, no worries, he can still make a roster as a 3rd, 4th or 5th rd pick, hold a clipboard until he maybe gets a shot as a starter, and make serious bank while doing it.

Dobbs has it all - except an accurate touch on the football. I wonder if scouts smarter than me can translate his skill set to another position.
I can't imagine his intelligence and talent as a runner / receiver not finding a fit at the next level, but I also cannot imagine anyone drafting Josh to be an NFL QB where anything less than solid passing skills are not acceptable.

Thats got to be the dumbest mock draft I've ever seen. Love Jamal Adams but if Sean Taylor couldn't go top 3, no safety ever will. Adams is in the lower top 10 though.

Fournette at 8 is a joke. If Elliott went #4, Fournette will be top 5 next year.

Christian McCaffrey is also not going in the 1st round. Just because you're a heisman contender, doesn't make you a first rounder (as Derrick Henry found out). McCaffrey doesn't have the build of an every down back. He'll go 2nd round at best.

Jabrill Peppers in the first round is a joke as well. The kid is so overrated it's not even funny. He couldn't start in our secondary yet they have him in the first lol.

I could keep going. But thats a horrible mock draft.
