CB and Safety Recruiting

Our cbs are taught to get their heads around in man. Redmond just did it for an int last game. Played perfectly.
Players don’t always do as they are coached and may on one play but not the next. Under the lights things change and sometimes panic sets in which is why you see WRs get mauled on under throws.
WM has been around a long time. He wouldn’t be around if cbs weren’t taught the right way.
Problem with our dbs has a lot to do with zone coverage, having them play soft, stare at the qb, hope the qb makes a bad throw and if not, go make the tackle. Absolutely horrible way to coach defense and take instinct away from your players.

Willie can't coach up CBs and safeties. Otherwise, we'd have an effective next man up crew. His guys don't look for the ball, they get outrun, just seem to always be late to the ball. Free Willie.

I've wondered the same thing. We can't get mid 4* and damn sure not 5* Secondary guys. We barely get low 4* players and those are few and far between. We love our 3* Secondary players here It's the lack of having elite recruiters or secondary Coach's that have shown to be able to develop players. Even our 2 projected 1st Rd guys( which I guarantee neither will go in the 1st Rd) were both transfers that had already been coached up before transferring here

That’s what I was thinking too. Maybe poster was alluding to those we missed out on?

Edit- corner and safety help have been needs for a few yrs, yet little depth. One or two hit the portal but I think OP is correct in that we’ve missed on a few recruits- including portal. Hood was a good edition.
Both of them were 3* on 247. Not the composite, but 247 ratings. Both were barely composite 4". They were as low 4* as you could get without being a 3*. We just aren't getting the high 4 and 5 Secondary players that we used to get. And we all know why

Yes its called the transfer portal where the Vols excel at CB position.
Had we had our 2 starting cornerbacks not go down with injuries, we would have been 10-2 or better without a doubt!!!
Safety is a tuff position to fill for all major schools, i hope we find a transfer stud.

Clueless ? I watch the damn games... 3 or 4 times a game the trainers are running out on the field and helping our linemen of the field at the 5 yard line.
Hey bro.
It’s be design. Heupel does that to give the defense extra rest.

Don’t mind the smartaaaa that can’t just explain something.

I disagree. . Hood is better than Gibson and DB was far from our only issue. Safety play was horrible, LB play was horrible, DL play was average at best.. Hood was one of the few Secondary bright spots. This was the worst tackling Defense I've seen at TN under Banks. Horrible angles to the ball, lack of in-game changes, tons of undisciplined penalties and just a soft group.Having Gibson and McCoy wouldn't have given us 2 more wins. I really wish DB was out only issue, I'd feel much better about how this year played out.. We gave up 30+ pts in every SEC game outside of Fla. Having McCoy would not have changed that a whole lot. Hell, we were literally 2 plays 10-2 and 2 plays from being 6-6.

That how everyone teaches it if you’re out of phase. When people say “they don’t turn their heads”, they’re only exposing how little they understand about playing DB.
Yeah, I remember a play(against Georgia iirc) when our CB was step for step with their WR along the sideline. Our CB turned his head for the ball and lost a step on the WR, which created separation. QB threw a bomb on the money for a touchdown that looked easy.

I’m Not a Martinez fan. I don’t like how he coaches the DB to watch the receiver’s eyes instead of DB turning his head to play the ball. Plus, I don’t like the cushion we give receivers.

Just my $.02.
Martinez has developed 3 CBs on this team into high round picks. Unfortunately, 2 were injured for the season. A 4th, Redmond, will likely also be a high round pick at his projected trajectory.

DBs are taught to follow a WRs eyes and then turn if they’re in position to, but if they’re trailing, not to turn (“trail technique”).

Anyone who thinks Martinez isn’t a good CB coach is telling on himself.

Well said. The defense was terrible at every level. Safeties and LBs particularly and the word in camp was how much this staff liked those positions. The whole defensive staff should be fired, with maybe the exception of Garner.

We have never been able to recruit the secondary… the best player I can remember us getting out of hs was Jaylen mccollough.
Dude with Pruitt we started two true freshman in Bryce thompson and alonte Taylor
We never had bodies.. it’s why we will never be UGA

We had two of the best in the SEC who were injured and one of them barely saw the the field. The other one did not see the field. They were both all SEC caliber CBs. We did get one of those from the portal but were did get both.

FSU head coach just fired Db coach Patrick Sartain, the teams best recruiter and developer who has sent three backs to the NFL. Seems a no Brainer, let's hire him.

OK, so we have some good DB's. Who teaches them to tackle? Why is 3rd down so easy for our opponents the last 2 yrs? And always out of position getting beat?
We wasn't tackling in practice, couldn't afford anyone else getting banged up since we were already playing Redmond that was needing to be redshirting. Redmond had gotten alot better from the beginning of the season till now. Would have to look at last years stats but having the 7th best defense some just get highlighted, remember the bad plays and bot so much of the ones that worked.

We don’t have an opening, but these folks wanting to keep Martinez are gaslighting.
