Casey Clausen

I have to admit that by his senior year I was pretty fed up with him. I was at the Peach Bowl vs Clemson (which he played pretty well in actually) and was very happy to see his career over by the end of that game.

I think a problem a lot of TN fans I know had is we were very spoiled by the Manning years and the NC Tee brought home. His bravado rubbed many the wrong way.

However, in retrospect he was a warrior. His road record is outstanding.

I do think a lot of Tennessee fans compare each of our quarterbacks to Peyton and they all come up short. They don't carry themselves the same way, they don't study or prepare the same way, or they don't win like he did. I would also say we compare most any skill positions to former players, and are often disappointed by what we find. This leads to a lot of bashing on the boards, and booing in the stands.

I personally don't like it. I'd say 99% of the kids that put on the orange go out there and do everything they can to win. If they're not that good, that's what it is, but they're not trying to sabotage the school either. Some fans act as though they are.

He was definitely the best of the 3 clausen brothers. Aren't we all so glad that Jimmy didn't come here? He was too cocky with nothing to back it up.

Here is a controversial statement, Crompton was a better QB at the end of his career than Clausen was at the end of his.

Clausen never really became the QB he showed flashes of becoming as a freshman in '00. He was the QB on some uber-talented, yet underachieving teams. And he built his legacy on consistently beating bad teams on the road.

^^this is where people will point out Miami '03 and UF '01. Yes, he did play well at UF in '01 but we don't win that game without a monster day on the ground from Stephens. As a senior playing at Miami in '03, Clausen didn't even have to pass for 100+ yards and we won.

Those are the staple wins of his career. Yet in one, his impact was minimal if any. In the other, a Florida team gave up its highest total of yards on the ground to a player not named Herschel Walker.

I wouldn't agree with this; but it is funny both their careers ended with bad games in the Chik-Fil-a/Peach Bowl.

A lot of UT fans didn't like Casey's bravado on the field. The truth of the matter is that kid gave all he had every time out. One of my favorites.

This...a million times over. Casey could've gotten a little more love but he played his ass off nonetheless. One of the best road QB's I've ever seen in the SEC. Definitely at the top of my list along with Peyton, Tee, and Shuler in no particular order.

Yes, UT fans do/did not give Casey enough credit...He beat Florida at the Swamp twice, he beat Alabama at BDS twice..He ended Miami's home winning streak, gave us a 11, 10 and a 8 win season..Played hurt, I will never forget how hurt he was when we played South Carolina in 2002....Yet UT fans still didn't show him enough love IMO...That comment about beating UGA in 2002 if he would have played hurt is support wayyyy more than it should have.

He was not Peyton or Tee, but better than anything we've had since (We will see what Bray does with a full season under his belt)..Maybe even better than Andy Kelly as well.

I concur.

Casey Clausen is definitely not top 5 but arguably a top 10 UT QB.

Here is a list of some of then from 1960's until current day.

Galiffa • Dewey Warren (1965-1967)• Bubba Wyche (1968)• Bobby Scott (1969-1971)• Condredge Holloway (1972-1974)• Randy Wallace (1975-1976)• Jimmy Streater 1977-1979)• Steve Alatorre (1980-1981)• Alan Cockrell (1982-1983)• Tony Robinson (1984-1985)• Jeff Francis (1986-1988)• Andy Kelly (1989-1991)• Heath Shuler (1992-1993)• Peyton Manning (1994-1997)• Tee Martin (1998-1999)• Casey Clausen (2000-2003)• Erik Ainge (2004)• Rick Clausen (2005)• Erik Ainge (2006-2007)• Crompton (2008-2009)• Simms/Bray(2010-present)

I highlighted the ones i think is as good or better or at least in the conversation. The earlier ones i only know from seeing highlights and hearing other peoples opinions about them, so forgive my ignorance if wrong but i actually think Clausen may be a better QB then either Dewey Warren or Bobby Scott. What say you?

I miss the Andy Kelly to Carl Pickens called by Ward.. makes me miss everything UT.. He was the only 45 yard fly that worked 85% all of the time :)

Yes he was solid.... but he did have a few games that jus stuck in peoples mind.. When he did bad it was terrible. One that still sticks in my mind was the four fumbles he had in the rain in one game.. I think it was FL at neyland.

I'd take another Casey Clausen in a heart beat. We haven't had a QB as good as him since he left.

Agreed. I live in Atlanta where they are calling certain QB "Matty Ice." There's only one ice man in my opinion -- Casey Clausen. Didn't he go like 11-1 on the road? Tennessee fans are never going to agree unless it's PM, and even then.....

Casey has a split fan base here in Tennessee. Guys I work with hated him but if you look at his overall win/loss he was great for us. In my opinion I rate QB's on how many games he wins because at the end of the day that is all that matters to me. I never actually liked him when he was here just because of his weak looking delivery, he ran like a girl, and he was a little arrogant to me. But I tolerated all that because he won most of the time.

Clausen is my 2nd favorite Vol in last decade.

Ditto. I get blasted all the time by my friends, but when this subject comes up I have always said that for college career only the gap between Clausen (Casey!) and Manning isn't as wide as most people think. Go ahead, bash me to your heart's content!

my favorite run in with another "fan" involves Casey Clausen. I haven't told it in awhile, so I'm gonna rehash it. Clausen's senior season I had season tix in YY9. Had those seats for a few years and the guy who sat to our right was a good guy, very knowledgeable about the game and UT in general, so we always sat and talked. There was a lady two rows above who hated Clausen with a passion. His entire career she would spend yelling about how everything was his fault and he shouldn't even get to dress. We would always make fun of her and throw stats at her until she'd shut up. Just about everyone in the section was on our side.

Well one game towards the end of Casey's senior season she went on this rant about how Clausen didn't care about UT. Said she knows it's true because he didn't even run through the "T" anymore. We stared in bewilderment for awhile, then laughed and told her that he was a unanimous pick for team captain (I believe he was the only unanimous pick that season) and so he didn't get to run through the T because he had to be at midfield for the coin toss. She didn't buy it and continued to believe Clausen didn't care about the Vols. Luck would have it that very week, Casey wrote a letter to the editor about how much he loved his time at Tennessee and his biggest regret was that he didn't get to run through the "T" anymore since he was now a captain. What made the thing great was the guy who sat beside me, framed the letter and somehow was able to sneak it into the stadium the next Saturday. He gave it to her and made this big show of it, making her a fool in front of not only our section but the sections around us. It was definitely one of the funnier moments in all the UT games I've ever been to.

how ironic, my friend and i were just discussing this. i was not a huge casey fan however we have not had the same success since he has gone. like him or not we were relevant during his career.
