Carolina Panthers

Ted Ginn Jr. coming back. I like it for the return game and sporadic play at WR. We still need significant upgrades at the #2 receiver. I hope that will be addressed.

I like the OT additions this offseason. Neither is a star LT but both are better than Bell.
Still hope we draft a guy like Fisher from Oregon.

Signed Charles Tillman today. He's still a serviceable CB. 1yr/$3.05mil

Not bad. He's had some health issues that last couple of seasons, but a lot of upside here.

Seems like a lot for an old/injured corner.
He is a good player when healthy, so I'm on-board.

I saw the contract breakdown and he'll only get close to that $3.05mil if he stays healthy and plays REALLY well as most of that money is based on playing time benchmarks, stats, awards, etc.

Not very much guaranteed money at all.

Any first round predictions?
I could truly see Gettleman going BPA but I'm hoping it's somebody to help Cam.
I heard a podcast from Charlotte where the guy almost guaranteed it will be one of these guys:
Landon Collins
Andrus Peat
Ereck Flowers
Jaelen Strong (this was before his injury was public)

I would love Devin Smith. He's a bit of a reach at that point, but won't be there for our second round pick. Cam desperately needs a deep threat to compliment Benjamin, and Smith fits the bill.

I wouldn't mind that pick.
If you're sold on going WR in the first, you should check out this guy's rankings. I've never seen such a thorough job done.

2015 NFL Draft Wide Receiver Rankings - Backyard Banter

Good write-up. I like DGB, but there is no way the Panthers pick a player like that, with Richardson owning the team. I think whoever drafts him is getting a stud, but the question is, can he stay on the field and out of trouble?

Thoughts on Thompson, Panthers fans?

In sleeping on it, I don't hate the pick, but I feel like he possibly would have been there for our 2nd round pick.

I love Thompson...just not at 25.
I hated that DJ Humphries went to Arizona, because it sounds like he would have been the pick. I would have gone with Jake Fisher or Devin Smith with the way things fell.
Hearing the list looks like this for tonight:
Devin Funchess
Jaelen Strong
Jake Fisher
Devin Smith

I don't hate the pick, but LB isn't a glaring need. He's a good player, but I think they could have traded back a few spots (if there was any interest) added a pick or two, and still could have got Thompson. I wonder if they're gonna try him at S or S/LB hybrid?

This. They also like him on special teams, where I think he'd make one hell of a gunner. Can also come in on short yardage plays on offense :eek:lol:.

Great post on CarolinaHuddle detailing where he'll be lined up: Round 1 - Carolina Panthers Select Shaq Thompson - Page 23 - Carolina Panthers -

I don't hate the pick, but the Panthers had much bigger needs to fill.

My biggest concern is the lack of play makers on offense. It could be a long and frustrating season if this is not addressed.

I was reassured a bit by Gettleman's answer on if Shaq was the BPA at that point, he stated that Humphries and Thompson were ranked the same, but the Cardinals swooping in and grabbing Humphries the pick before, solidified the Thompson selection. Gettleman knows the team's needs, and he's drafted excellently since he's been in Carolina. I still trust his judgement.

I really dislike trading up for Funchess. Why not take Fisher there???
Will be kind of easy to defend a bunch of tall/slow receivers for a competent DC.

I don't think Funchess is all that slow, 4.45 at his size is moving. Don't think he's a great pass catcher our route runner yet, so matching him up with Kelvin will be interesting, as they're similar receivers.

I like that we made a move on a tackle there, but is Clemmings really THAT injured? I would have liked a gamble on him, but Williams is a good pick up IMO.

According to Jonathan Jones, the Panthers weren't that high on Clemmings even before the injury.
