Willie Carmichael showed up over the summer standing a lanky 6-foot-10 and weighing a rail-thin 185 pounds. Since then, the University of Tennessee freshman has been eating. And eating some more. And then eating some more after that.

“I’m eating a lot of stuff that’s high-protein,” said Carmichael, a forward on coach Donnie Tyndall’s first Tennessee basketball team. “Just anything that (UT sports nutritionist) Allison (Mauer) at the food station tells me to eat.

“I’m eating a lot more than I used to, whatever they tell me to.”

He likes to eat, he said with a smile and a laugh, and good thing. Most days he loses track of how many times he’s eaten. He checked in at 208 pounds Monday, up 23 pounds a day removed from the start of Tennessee’s practices last Sunday at Pratt Pavilion.

6'10" in the new Stiletto high tops.
Anyway, good news. Hope Owens is experiencing similar results.

I didn't realize he was 6-10. Is that correct? I thought he was more like 6-8

I think the reporter mixed up the heights with Owens. If anything, I suspect Carmichael is closer to 6-6.

Sounds like a high motor kid, though, and effort can overcome size to some extent.

He told me on twitter that he was up to 210 pounds from 185. He is our starting center right now. Tyndall says he will be a very good SEC player in the future needs to eventually get to about 230. Woodson will have to lose at least 15 pounds and make all the times for physical fitness. Everyone on the team has made them except him Tyndall says this is the best conditioned team he has had as a coach.

DT On Basilio today said the two players exceeding expectations were Willie and Punter.

Among other things he said was he has kept stats on conditioning for all his teams at certain times in the preseason. He said this team is in the best condition of any team he has had except for the Morehead team when K Farrid was a senior.

Met him today. I'm 6'7 and he's got an inch or 2 on me.

That's good news then. I had read several stories on him from his senior year in high school where they were bouncing him from 6-5 to 6-7. If he's really pushing 6-9, then he really might have a chance of carrying 235 or 240 pounds and being an effective 5 in the SEC, not just a stop gap.

Faried was listed at 6'7" 190lbs coming out of high school, I think you'll see a similar path Faried had to building his body.
