Carmelo is now a Knick

Nuggets right now are winning that trade. The Knicks basically had to blow up their team by giving away many of their complimentary pieces just to get Carmelo.

Didn't the Nuggets have to give up their supposed core with Melo and Billups in that trade? There are no excuses. Bottom line, Nuggets got the better of the trade and almost nobody expected that.

I did, especailly in the short term. Denver got some really good players. No superstars, just solid players.

Wonder if Hat still thinks that Melo is a top 5 player in the league?

I think this trade proves otherwise, completely over-rated.

Denver got a good trade because of the leverage they had with the CBA. Bad timing for the Knicks.
Knicks are in the playoffs, that was the goal, so the trade still works. The Knicks record is about on par after the trade as it was before. The constant is D'Antoni. His refusal to attempt defense is obvious. Knicks beat the Cavs pretty good in spite of the Cavs shooting 53% from the field.
Billups will be gone next year and hopefully CP3 will come with a new coach.

It's close to not debatable that as an individual, Carmelo has one of the best skill sets in the NBA.

Whether or not he's a slacking hack who isn't conducive to good team play is another matter.

Clearly he is versatile and talented, just not efficient.

Before Melo:
.519

After Melo:
.454

Staying on par is not what people expected. They expected the Knicks to be a lot better. They got worse. But let's blame D'antoni and not the GM and the new players. Let us not forget that Denver is absolutely destroying it.

No one expected the Knicks to get A LOT better, they had to give up too much because of the CBA. This trade was not made to contend immediately, they need to make the playoffs and did. The Knicks have not gotten worse, every team has streaks during a season.
You're ignorance of the NBA is so remarkable, I'm at a loss for words. Instead of reading the box score the morning after, try actually watching the game.

I don't necessarily buy that the move to get Melo was the best thing they could have done... IMO the presence of a superstar being the difference between making the playoffs and winning a title is overblown. Defense and post presence is what wins titles, the Knicks have neither with any sort of consistency.

Agree. But getting Melo was the best thing left. Walsh was certain he'd get Lebron and him going to Miami left him reeling a bit.

He wasn't even going to deal Mosgov but was left little choice really. In reality, seeing how bad Isiah nuked the franchise, I can't see Walsh doing anything better than he has, other than replacing D'Antoni.

Walsh only has one more season max so its still uncertain what 2012 will look like.

Skill wise he isn't a top 5 player.

He is an above average shooter within the arc.
Below average behind it.
Good rebounder for his position.
Average passer for his position.
Below average defender.
Average free throw shooter.

He leaves Denver and they are a much better team, the Knicks on the other hand are a worse team.

I think he is so overrated.

Skill wise melo is easily a top 5-10 player. Denver is good right now because they have depth which is something the knicks lack. The trade from the knicks perspective is for the future and definitely not this year though.

Plenty of guys can get 25 points a night in the NBA.

Another thing the Knicks also got is an aging Chauncey Billups, who is rumored to not even be a part of the Knicks' future plans. At the time, I thought the Knicks won the trade ,but I really loved what Denver was able to receive in return. The Knicks losing their key complimentary pieces in Chandler, Felton, and Gallinari was going to hurt them in the short-term. There's no doubt about that. It's obvious that Denver wanted to do this trade. They wanted to get something back ,and they got more than just something. They got a lot back. As for New York, it was a gamble. By them doing this trade, it shows that they could care less about this season's success. They're trying to win now ,but they basically threw this season out the door. For them to be successful in the long-term, they're going to need to find a way to blend Anthony and Amare together, and they're also going to need to add some role players in the offseason to compliment both.

(1) A lot of people thought it made them instant contenders.

"He [Amare] thinks the blockbuster deal could make them better equipped to face teams such as Boston or Miami, which already have multiple All-Stars, in the postseason.

"It's not easy and it's not going to get any easier for us now because the target is on our back," Stoudemire said. "Teams are going to be eager to play against us.""

(2) No matter how many times you say this, Melo keeps proving me right and you wrong.

Yeah, but plenty of guys could average 25 ppg if their coaches allowed them to take as many shots as Melo takes.

This.

He is a really good player, everyone mentions his ability to score. That is only one part of the game.

He isn't efficient in his scoring.

When talking about the best players, all around game is what you have to look at.

In that regard, he isn't a top 5 player, maybe not top 10.

Off the top of my head.

LeBron James
Kobe Bryant
Dwight Howard
Chris Paul
Pau Gasol
Dywayne Wade
Kevin Durant

All those guys are better than Melo. I could name a few more but would get plastered for it, so I won't.
