As long as the scripture quoted can’t be construed as - they do not wilfully promote hatred against an identifiable group?Good Lord no they didn't
It's literally saysAs long as the scripture quoted can’t be construed as - they do not wilfully promote hatred against an identifiable group?
Either way, seems pretty antithetical to free speech. Though I’m not sure what kinds of protections Canada has for speech. They may be more akin to Britain where speech deemed harmful by the State can be suppressed.
In this country, under our constitution, hate speech is free speech.
Which is not trueCanada just criminalized reading the Bible
Seriously, can we stop quoting Hercules?Yea, it’s a WTO banger, with a salacious headline. What else is new.
I’m talking about the bill itself, and the language I posted.
Quoting Hercules? I honestly don’t follow. I’ve only quoted you here.Seriously, can we stop quoting Hercules?
It's slippery but no one else really has the protections on speech like the US. They should but it won't happen
It's why any attempt to limit speech on this country should be spotted down quickly and loudly. See it on this board more and more which tells me a fight is coming
Lol. You think if some pagan group is offended and they make a complaint, the gov will not side with them? It always starts like this. It's literally says
Which is not true
Maybe Grok can post the actual law that was passed?
The fact that any verse in the Bible can be construed as hate speech is an issue. Whether they like it or not, quoting a Bible verse straight from the Bible is not hate.. it's factual. This will most definitely be used to persecute Christians in the future. Corruption and evil has infiltrated that Country and they want Christianity banned. This is exactly why you don't allow minority groups of radical ideals/lifestyles to gain power, they will try to destroy every single belief, culture, or group that doesn't agree with their ways.If you read carefully, there is a statement that quoting scripture is not punishable unless…..
Offence requires wilful intent + extreme hatred (detestation/vilification) per Supreme Court. No ban on Bible reading/quoting.
Of course the key question is who decides what a speakers “willfull intent” is? What constitutes “extreme” hatred as opposed to “moderate” hatred?
The standard is vague and wide enough to drive a truck through.
Even if speakers are ultimately cleared, they will have spent maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars on their legal defense.
The law will clearly be used as a threat and will have a widespread chilling effect on free speech.
Yes “criminal” judges as you point out. What business does a “criminal” judge have in even thinking about making such a determination regarding free speech and freedom of religion.Criminal judges do that literally every day. Congrats on finally learning the concept of mens rea at your big age
You said judges have no business determining intent. It's literally their job. Judges in all types of cases do it. Feel free to post more word salad as you cope with how dumb your statement wasYes “criminal” judges as you point out. Criminal law includes the presumption that certain acts (or in this case speech) might be criminal. The very fact that any nation wishing to be considered free would even contemplate making the quotation of any religious text criminal is anathema to everything we claim to value in a classically liberal society
So how would you feel if we passed a law that said it was illegal to criticize Trump if you had ill intent or extreme hatred? Now imagine I was a judge in charge of reviewing your posts here. Would you be comfortable with that? You said judges have no business determining intent. It's literally their job. Judges in all types of cases do it. Here’s the interesting question you should ask yourself. Would Canada ever, even in a million years, prosecute a follower of Islam who quoted the Quran to call homosexuality a sin?The fact that any verse in the Bible can be construed as hate speech is an issue.
