Look, I know this loss hurts because we were favored to beat a ranked team at our house on Senior night. I understand it's easy to get caught up in everything, but was the hype really warranted?

I really like Dobbs and what he brings to the offense, but the offense with him did well versus an Alabama team that quit playing because they knew they would win, a TERRIBLE South Carolina defense, and a downward-spiraling Kentucky team. We assumed that our three wins trumped the year-long resume that Missouri's defense earned, with the exception of a game or two.

To add to this, we were fairly shorthanded on defense, for almost the whole first half, and a good part of the second half. Partner that with our most highly regarded receiver being out, and some questionable calls down the stretch, is this fanbase REALLY in meltdown mode over losing to a top-20, Division leading team? I understand they're probably going to be the worst East champ ever if they hold on, but they're in no way "bad."

Mizzou might not be the most statistically sexy team, but they lead in the important statistic, and that's Wins and Losses and experience.

I too was drinking the Kool-Aid all week, but much like the feeling I had heading into Florida, I had it heading into this game. I felt like our young team was being hyped past what it should have been, and Volnation is going to crucify them for losing to a team they realistically should have beaten.

All of this being said, I really think we're headed in the right direction. The fact that Butch Jones has, with 23 true freshman playing this year, made Vol Fans and the nation confident enough in the job he's done with the young guys to predict a win over a top-20, division leading team speaks for itself.

The outcome of this game doesn't mean anything. We are likely to have gone to the same bowl if we won the last 2 games or just beat Vandy. National experts know what's happening on Rocky Top, and get ready guys, because it's coming.

I mean, it was a big game competition wise, and had big impact for Mizzou/Georgia, but our bowl game would have been basically the same regardless of the result as long as we beat Vandy...

BTW, what part of Raleigh/Durham are you from? I'm in Cary/Apex

Butch just needs 9 more recruiting classes and 10 more years to get this thing where it needs to be.

Just think it's a bigger let down than anything... On paper UT should have won the game. Georgia beat Mizz 30-0. Mizz struggled against KY and Vandy. The Fla game was a question mark however.

But what on paper says UT should have won the game? Missouri has a proven record of beating good teams in tough environments, we don't even have a good record of beating decent teams in our own house. Just because we ran over two horrible defenses means nothing. Just ask Texas A&M. They did it to begin the year.

Mizzou has beaten no ranked teams
Lost to Indiana... at home
Got trucked by 34 against UGA
Only beat Vandy by 10

It was a very winnable game. I predict Arky mauls them

We caught them on their good week. They will play Arky like they did Indiana and get run all over.

What message boards are saying: Tennessee edition:

I didn't have to look very hard to find a great site for TN fans. VolNation.com was by far the best site I found. After the Mizzou loss they were pretty much melting down.

One guy in particular, although apparently well-known and usually level-headed, even questioned Butch's ability to restore their program. He even compared the TN situation to the Arkansas situation despite Arkansas having many more winning seasons in recent years and a much better roster last year!

I said let's get 6 wins before the season and we're right on track to get there. So let's go get number 6/6 next week!

This and Florida were Butch's most important games of the season. They were also both extremely winnable. He laid an egg in both of them. 11 carries for Hurd? Keeping Dobbs in the pocket like he's a pocket-passer??

Yeah I'm absolutely questioning Butch's ability to restore a program.

It's the mentality of your last paragraph that sums it all up. It would have made a big difference if we won this game. It would keep that flame burning that was lit after that South Carolina game. When you accept & expect losses, you coach in a loosing manner, players play in a loosing manner, & fans react in a loosing manner, like no sell outs ,& fans leaving this game EARLY. I think we are headed in the right direction also, but the teams that have that losing record one year then the top 5 & possible national champ the next like Auburn last year, & Miss St this year, all play with a mentally that they cannot & will not lose. We played rather conservative & not going for at least a FG before halftime with the ball ,around 1:20 left & timeouts just killed us. We made a move at around 6 min left & made it interesting, but why wait til the final 6 min?

When did I ever say it wasn't an important game for the players. All I said was that win or lose, as long as we beat Vandy and got bowl eligible, we would have likely gone to the same bowl game. Please don't twist my words just to try to correct me.

Perhaps I was sloppy with wording that last paragraph, but I thought the point was clear enough. I was talking in regards to which bowl we went to.

I didn't say it wasn't an important game for momentum, recruiting, the seniors, etc. I just said that at this point, 7-5 or 6-6 realistically gets us to basically the same bowl game. I'm saying, in terms of postseason, a win or a loss doesn't hurt or help us much.

Apologies to everyone if you read it the way several posters have, I can see the confusion.

Questioning it is one thing. You're pretty much saying he can't get it done. It's just not rational. Sure, there have been some head-scratching moments, but it's not reasonable to expect a much better season than we have had this year given our current circumstances. He has one full recruiting class on the active roster and all indicators point to us moving in the right direction.

We are woefully thin and out-manned and out-experienced in each of the games we lost this year, save maybe FL.
