Can Someone Explain To Me Why

I would think CDD and staff would take both Redmond and Kimbrow if they were ready to commit to the Vols. I am of the opinion the main reason Memphis kids tend to go to schools other than UT is their HS coaches. They have long made a very big effort to steer their kids away from Knoxville. I don't think that will change anytime soon. We will get the occassional kid from East Mississippi as his family is Vol fans and that overtakes the coaches bias.

Because the Atlanta area has 10 for every 1 good player that Memphis has and much closer.
Fulmer did not mess up Memphis- there are just better players elsewhere.

Have you ever been on Vandy's campus? Their are some very beautiful girls, but from what I have seen, they have the lowest number per capita of any SEC school I have ever been to. They are not even on par with UTM or UTC...

Vanderbilt men date coeds from other schools in the area such as Belmont, Lipscomb, Tenn. State, etc. Don't feel sorry for them!

the bar-b-q in east tennessee isn't good enough to keep the kids from memphis happy.

plus, knoxville is not a ****hole. it confuses kids from memphis who are more comfortable in their natural surroundings of rot and decay.

As having lived outside of Memphis for almost a year, I second this post! The city is pretty much the armpit of the South... (but they do have good barbeque)

you wonder why memphis kids hate UT?

it couldnt be the way Memphis is looked down upon by a good portion of Vol fans could it?

Hurl insults at their city and programs but then want the "in state talent" to pick the state school, HA!

This tends to come from everyone outside the city of Memphis.

I have commented about this on numerous occasions regarding HS fb and bball and the coaching fraternity in the Memphis metro school system. I was labeled as an idiot and racist, even though I coached in Memphis for several years in the mid/late 90's and still am in contact with many old friends. I'll say it again: Many young kids in Memphis are influenced by their families, coaches and "handlers" or advisors, just as kids in other areas are. Some of those advising these kids have engrained in their heads that East Tn is redneck and white and they would feel out of place on the Hill, compared to their current comfort level at home or with those they feel comfortable with. It takes a smart kid and good parents to get past that aspect and hopefully UT can change the attitude, but some HS coaches need to retire or be fired first.

We have a winner.

East doesn't like West. West doesn't like East. And it's never anyone's fault but the other side.

Lock the thread.

...all good points.

Probably a good idea at this point.

could this be why kimbrow is rumored to be committing to vandy soon? Early, and until recently, in the recruiting process it was believed by many that kimbrow was a top priority of the staff and he was very high on ut. Does he feel slighted because the staff won't let him commit so he's decided he doesn't want to be a vol?

the #1 player in the state not having a committable offer seems strange, no?

lws?

he in fact has not shown the staff that he is all that interested in Tennessee. At camp, he showed very little effort. So I don't know if he feels slighted but he didn't impress the staff very much with his attitude.

He has never indicated, to my knowledge, that UT was at top of his list.

There are several things that are factor but I don't view it has hate toward UT. There are just factors about how kids chose where they go to school.

First off, as of today Kimbrow and Redmond don't have commitable offers to Tennessee. IMO, we would NOT take their commitments next week either. So if they are ready to commit, they will end up committing elsewhere.

Memphis is closer to 7 other SEC schools than to Tennessee. Being closer is a HUGE factor with families so they can go see their kids play. Outside of relationships with coaches recruiting them, distance to family and friends is the next factor when considering schools.

Memphis recruiting has always been sparadic throughout Tennessee history. More so since the 70s and more so since Fulmer took a more national approach.

The conference was so weak in the 90s and CPF was able to get elite players from the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama that Memphis and the state foe that matter, were not a priority. The record in the 90s would dictate the strategy was pretty good.

That people are afraid to broach the subject or have this discussion is one of the reasons why the issues haven't changed in the last 25 years between UT and Memphis.

True.

But, I don't have much faith when it comes to some of my fellow vol fans being civil on this board.

little rock
birmingham
montgomery

these are three cities that i suspect those who call memphis 'the armpit of the south' have never visited.

memphis gets hated on by the other parts of the state so they feel no allegiance to tennessee, and therefore their prospects have no problem going somewhere other than ut.

depends on where he is on our board at RB and over all. Suppose we can only take one running back and we have 3-4 others rated ahead of him? With only about 20 ships to give, we can't take a commitment from him right now. Doesn't matter if rated # 1 in state or # 5.

CDD doesn't pay attention to ratings by the way

Fair enough. Thanks for the response :hi:

Oh I know CDD doesn't and I'm a big CDD fan, I like his style of recruiting and I think he's going to do very well at UT. I was just hoping for some clarification on the Kimbrow issue and I know you're "in the know". And you've cleared it up for me, thank you. :good!:
