Memphis kids seem to hate UT? I know that there are exceptions, but for the most part we just dont have any love there. I know the whole distance from Knoxville thing, but there seems to be more to it than that. Several will say that Phil ignored the city, but my question is, Did Majors, Battle, Dickey, etc have these issues? Just read a rumor from a really solid source that Kimbrow and Redmond are headed to Vandy, both have UT offers and it makes no sense.

They will be the "Stars", might not have to work as hard for playing time, Plus a ton of hot smart chicks!

There are several things that are factor but I don't view it has hate toward UT. There are just factors about how kids chose where they go to school.

First off, as of today Kimbrow and Redmond don't have commitable offers to Tennessee. IMO, we would NOT take their commitments next week either. So if they are ready to commit, they will end up committing elsewhere.

Memphis is closer to 7 other SEC schools than to Tennessee. Being closer is a HUGE factor with families so they can go see their kids play. Outside of relationships with coaches recruiting them, distance to family and friends is the next factor when considering schools.

Memphis recruiting has always been sparadic throughout Tennessee history. More so since the 70s and more so since Fulmer took a more national approach.

The conference was so weak in the 90s and CPF was able to get elite players from the Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama that Memphis and the state foe that matter, were not a priority. The record in the 90s would dictate the strategy was pretty good.

It's because Memphis is backwards. Mississippi or Arkansas can take them for all I care.

They dont!

The relationships were not as good under Fulmer and this hurt us. I know you said you know this but it was 17 years of not really recruting memphis hard. The kids here still see UT as the home team with memphis. This is clear every year when you hear guys like Kimbrow mention it. All we need is for DD to repair this relationship a little, there is no hate, as you could see last year. He did pretty well in memphis and TN in general with very little time to build the relationship. The situation will get better and better, no doubt!

Its because all the people in Memphis get inside these kids head and feed them crap about other schools. Thats one of the big factors in Memphis kids for Basketball too.

the bar-b-q in east tennessee isn't good enough to keep the kids from memphis happy.

plus, knoxville is not a ****hole. it confuses kids from memphis who are more comfortable in their natural surroundings of rot and decay.

Have you ever been on Vandy's campus? Their are some very beautiful girls, but from what I have seen, they have the lowest number per capita of any SEC school I have ever been to. They are not even on par with UTM or UTC...

Back to the topic: Being from West TN, I can tell you that people in the Memphis area either really love UT or really hate UT. People that are on this forum remember when the Vols were a perennial Top 10 Team, these kids do not. These kids were born in like 92' or 93'. They were about 9 or 10 the last time we were good.

Another factor, as mentioned, is the distance. Six hour drives one way to see your kid play gets expensive. Especially in today's economy with gas prices so high. Many of the kids mentioned are from low income families, so the burden is exponentially greater on them.

I heard a rumor that Vandy will win four games this year, when recruits see that, they will bounce.

It's June people.

I am originally from Memphis.
City motto should be: "our goal is half-ass or not at all"
Best decision that I have ever made was to travel to UTK for college...trip is only 6 hours by car... directions are easier than any other SEC school...get on I-40 east then exit UTK!!! Even a Memphian can do that :)

Any Memphis athlete given the scholarship opportunity should jump on it...unfortunately any tiger high fan would encourage them to go Anywhere else.

Have trained vandy grads...not even close to the quality you get from UTK in my opinion. Too much attitude of entitlement and false superiority complex. Silver spoon fed commodores routinely get their arses kicked by hard working Volunteers here in Texas!

Really? That's interesting. Not today, but next week they will? I'm confused, please explain...

a vandy commit that would get spooked by a losing season is a moron because that's all vandy ever has. I think a vandy commit already knows they aren't going to be very good or they definitely are not qualified academically to attend vanderbilt.

someone has to want to go to vandy either for the education or the belief that they and others who join them will be so good that they can play early and win, whereas others have failed.

I blame Leanne Tooey. She adopts all the good players from that city and converts them to Ole Miss fans.

Ahh, ok. So why don't they have commitable offers anymore?

they don't have commitable offers at this point but that is true of dozens of kids we have offered. We are still assessing things. We have well over 125 offers out there. Majority cannot be commitable right now. in fact, very few are

There offers were probably never comittable at this time. If it was January and UT had couple of spaces to fill and they wanted to committ then they would be committable.

Could this be why Kimbrow is rumored to be committing to Vandy soon? Early, and until recently, in the recruiting process it was believed by many that Kimbrow was a top priority of the staff and he was very high on UT. Does he feel slighted because the staff won't let him commit so he's decided he doesn't want to be a Vol?

The #1 player in the state not having a committable offer seems strange, no?
