Can SEC Reverse Suspension for Targeting?

Bad call on the field which I can understand when things are going full speed.

Replay is what was horrid.

The WR caught the ball, had time to tuck and secure it, turned his head around so he COULD see the hit coming and he took 3 steps with the ball.

All of that clearly, by the rules, says he was NOT defenseless at all.

The hit on the tackle was clean, by the rules, so review should have reversed the call on the field.

Mosely should NOT have been ejected.

The clean hit caused a fumble which was secured by 2 Vols players.

Right review call should have been a clean hit causing a fumble recovered by Tennessee.

1st down Tennessee!!!

In both the NCAA and in the NFL the zebras this season have been incompetent.

That needs to be corrected very quickly!

Duke got royally screwed on the last play of their game and lost by bad calls and a 9 minute horrid review.

This crap MUST stop!

Situational rules and reviews are slowly ruining football for me. All they do is move or create new boundary conditions that have to be examined with a microscope with a time consuming replay review. I'll take the days of no replay reviews and a catch was just an official's judgement call as to whether there was one foot down and possession, over what the policing has evolved to now.

No way a sorry azz replay official should have the authority to make a call like this that cannot be overturned. I would like to know where he is from, probably FL or Bama. He should lose his job as a replay official.

Not that it matters much now but it appeared to me that the ref threw the flag AFTER he saw the UK player was not getting up.. He over reacted to the results of the hit, which I guess I can understand, but the replay official(s) DEFINITELY blew it..

It has to do with deciding whether the player was "defenseless."

There are actually two NCAA targeting rules, either of which can draw the targeting penalty. One has to do with initiating contact with the crown of the helmet.

Moseley very clearly did not do that.

The second rule concerns hitting a defenseless player in the head or neck:

So if the player is considered defenseless, hitting him in the head or neck with pretty much any part of your body above the waist is a penalty.

So how does the NCAA define a "defenseless" player? Not very well, the definition is pretty much just a repeat of the word "defenseless." But they do give examples:

I bolded the one that comes closest to applying here.

The bottom line is, the player had time after catching the ball to turn his head forward, adjust his grip on the ball, and take three steps. He was no longer "defenseless" by any reasonable interpretation.

Combine that with the fact that Moseley did not use the crown of his helmet, and it's pretty clear that neither of the rules were violated.

The NCAA should reverse this ruling, and reprimand the replay official.

Good work.

What really ticks me off is while none of this applies to the Mosely hit it most certainly applies to the shot in the head Hurd took on that interception. Hurd got hit helmet to helmet while trying to make a catch. Of course that was a no call.

Yeah I'm in total agreement. Replay official should be fired there is no way he was doing his job. I' wonder what head of officials will say to him

I thought I saw that too. But on the replay, I only saw 81(not sure?). Anyway, if its the part of the play im thinking of, the guy just uses his arms to push the players head down so he cant see. It wasnt like he was targeting the head that could impact a player's health. Im fine with the no-call (again, if its what I think you were talking about, and I dont think that was hurd). Be nice to see the replay

What about Kentucky's interception that came not too long after the targeting call? I thought THAT was blatant targeting that should've been called against Kentucky!

I think what the replay official saw was the UK receiver's head turn due to contact from EM's side/underarm to the lower part of the face mask.

Now, it was obvious EM was attempting to hit low and with his body. It was text book. But that's the only rationale I can find for upholding the call. It's horrible that EM will have to sit for a half due to that.

Jonathan Johnson was the receiver, and you're certainly correct. It looked much more like targeting than Mosley.

Review is unable to reach that result.

Targeting is a subjective call, even in the replay booth. Shouldn't have been called but wont be overturned, imop.

My thoughts exactly. You are dead on. Then the guy got up and walked off.

Anybody else disappointed butch went the company man route instead of publicly getting his players back and ripping the refs and bringing attention to the terrible call?

If I'm not mistaken, he did rip the ref, called him a dumbass and told him to look at the big screen.

I saw the play, and it was a beautiful hit. My question is, is what the **** happened to football? It seems like year by year it just deteriorates. Sissy ass bull****, oh god you can't hit anyone hard, player has to be ready for hit??? WTF!!!! Football used to be a war, players getting the holy **** knocked out of them every play, now it's turned into a softball game on Saturdays and Sundays. I really wish they would stop all this complete protection sissy bull****.
