can our front 7 stop the run

There were management issues of the players that contributed to the injuries. You have to have S&C. You have to have correct technique and development. The system has to protect the players to an extent. And... you have to rotate your players and trust your back ups. To me, that has been a sore spot for UT during Jones' tenure. Some of it is depth... but the other part is getting a guy out there knowing he's a risk but also knowing you have to protect the health of your key people.
no, just no. S&C might have contributed to some of the injuries but most of the injuries were of the bad luck type. People failing drugs tests and quitting the team is on S&C? It was the perfect storm of crap things went bad but I get so tired of people trying to blame everything on one person or one thing... the sheer number and variety of injuries point AWAY from S&C if anything.

agree when they kicked O Brain off
the team a lot of player did not like it. so they would not take pain killing shots and play sore. that was some of the cause for the rash of injuries. but not all..

Ill by that.
you are very active on the forum. you have read almost every post i have made . you have seen me slam posters that have said nasty stuff about me. but i do not slam our team. you know better.. you seam like a ok person . i do not want to post hash replays .. let this crazy stuff stop. i just want to talk about football

If they can't, it's going to be along season.

Bob Shoop won't be around long it the Vols can't stop the run better than they did in 2016..... is Kirkland the only LB the Vols have that may play at the next level.... the Vols need better LB's and corners (last year was ugly at times)

"Know"? We can't really know a situation will work out for anyone in any job. I have hired people that were qualified and seemed like terrific candidates who just didn't fit for one reason or another. That multiplied by about 1000 is what you have when you add a coach to a football staff.

Yep. A staff overhaul of this magnitude is historically a crap shoot in terms of success or not. It may work out great, or it may take half the season before all of the new coaches are working well together, or it may be that some of them don't work out at all.

If we're healthy on the DL and at LB, we definitely have the talent to be good or even really good run defense.

We've gotta stay healthy and see some development at LB and DT though.

No, just no. There IS NO SUCH ANIMAL as "luck". As Darrell Royal used to say, luck is when preparation meets opportunity. The converse is true of "bad luck". "Luck" in the strictest sense appeals to a random and causeless effect.... which doesn't exist. If causes lead to effects... then you have something you can anticipate and prevent if you can find the patterns.

And if you are going to make this appeal to "luck"... then maybe after 3 consecutive years of higher than average injury rates... Jones simply isn't "lucky" enough to keep the job?

People failing drugs tests and quitting the team is on S&C?
Were those injuries? They compounded the injuries. But since you bring it up... those are also things that land ultimately at the feet of the HC.

It was the perfect storm of crap things went bad but I get so tired of people trying to blame everything on one person or one thing... the sheer number and variety of injuries point AWAY from S&C if anything.
I didn't just list one thing. I listed several... one of which was possibly S&C. And regardless of how you balance the factors, responsibility for preventing and overcoming them DOES come back to one person.... That responsibility is why he makes over $4 million per year.

which is exactly my point.. last year was an avalanche of crap that all ended up in the train tunnel up the middle of our defense. Ye some of the things could have been controlled somewhat by the coaches if that was all there was. But it was a nonstop horror show up there man. the fact they won as many games as they did and came out in that bowl looking like they did speaks volumes.

We had 2 losses last year that would universally be viewed as bad losses but even those has a lot of mitigating circumstances.

S.C. the out comes of the SC game was in my opinion mostly because of one person Hurd. it is one thing to lose one of your best players to injury or stupid off the field stuff. What happened with Hurd was so out of left field and unprecedented I have no memory of a similar case. One of your best players that's is a starter about to break school records and be a high draft pick literally quits on the team? No coach has a speech ready for that one. On top of the injuries that had to be a massive morale sapper these guys had fought through all those injuries and then that happens?

Vandy. terrible game but it was the worst possible matchup we could have had at that time. Vandy had a very very very good rushing attack. Vandy regularly not only saves their best game for us they go to hyperdrive. Vandy can go 0-x up till that game and come out playing like its the national title game and superbowl wrapped into one against us. Thats a fact. THe team came out and didn't respect Vandy just like UT fans do not. Big mistake underestimate them against anyone but big brother. Oh yeah and we were what starting basically our 3rd and 4th string at DT at that point? I am sure they were giving safeties a hard look at DT at that point.

Yeah we got ate up by the run by teams they were eating people alive in the run game all year.. its not like some team that was averaging 20 yards a game came in and rushed for 500.

Go watch a replay of the Florida game of him running stride for stride with Scarlett out of the backfield and making a beautiful defensive play to swat the ball away....

It was a nice game by Jumper and I'm sure a nice play by Jumper, but I promise you he can't run stride-for-stride with Scarlett. Scarlett is a 4.4 guy, Jumper at best, is in the 4.65 range.
