Here is a bit of perspective. has anyone wondered why Butchs' teams always take a quantum leap for bowl games? it is because of 2 things. The extended period of time to prepare and the ability to get a lot of guys reps that would have gotten reps in the regular season.

Now this is the part where someone pops out and says well he does not perform this way in game 1 each season and has all offseason to prepare. The answer is that is totally different game 1 you are preparing for what might be. For a bowl game you have a season worth of tape on the team.

Do I think our D will be world beaters? Heck no, but they will be much improved over what we saw over those last 3 games. I keep seeing people say last 5 games but erm last I checked Tn tech put a goose egg on the scoreboard and 224 yards of total offense. The south Carolina game was not a defensive breakdown it was a whole team breakdown and I blame most of that on the distraction caused by Hurd. They also only produced a bit over 300 yards of total offense.

Our defensive breakdowns in the last 3 games were amplified by the teams we played. lets not fool ourselves Before they played us Vandy and Kentucky were 2 of the best rushing attacks in the SEC (UK was 3rd total behind alabama and auburn). Missouri was one of the best offenses in the SEC (2nd behind alabama in total offense and second in passing behind ole miss 7th in rushing right ahead of UT)

Vandy was just a complete brainfart. Most people fans included do not give Vandy the respect they deserve on their end all be all game. The tradition had kind of went away the past decade or better to say they didn't feel like the underdogs they actually are so lost their hunger. Vandy used to be a team that would play their best game of the year against UT. no matter how bad they were they wanted that game and we knew it. This team didn't know it. You can blame anyone you want but it was the wakeup call I think this coaching staff needed. This season was that.

the one really great positive from this season is this. We won't have this problem next year. Guys that in normal circumstances wouldn't have gotten a single meaningful snap this year played some serious time and got quality reps and will get more between now and Nebraska. Shoop got a look at guys he might not have had a chance to see until next year and a better idea of what holes need plugging in the recruiting class.

This Vol team will show up in Nashville and the results will likely be quite similar to bowl games of the past few seasons. The defense will look better. Even though Nebraska has the same advantage of a full year of tape on us they have never seen a tape of a healthy UT team. No one has.

How many of you know that UT had the second best scoring offense in the SEC and lead the league in QBR? First in td's. @ Qbs in the SEC threw for over 20 TD's only one threw less than 10 ints (Jalen Hurts at 9) os Dobbs 12 is not a huge anomaly like a lot of people try to make it out. especially when you consider the game situations he was in when he threw them. This has been an outstanding team that has faced a tremendous amount of adversity this season and still performed as expected minus the vandy game.

Imagine what this team if Jalen Hurd and Preston Williams had not given up. What do we look like without the devastating injuries to Cam, Kirkland and JRM early season and the decimation that happened at DT. Trust me if Hurd hadn't left the team and we hadn't lost Tuttle and KMac we are sitting at 10-3 now and everyone is bi--hing about why we cant seem to beat Bama. because if one thing is true no matter what folks around here will find something to burn a mattress about. If the past 2 months have not shown you that east Tennessee has an obsession with arson I don't know what to tell you. We love complaining about everything an setting fire to the house we live in.

The fact is we are facing yet another mid to lower tier B10 team who is now down their best WR and possibly their starting QB. We should show up and dominate given those 2 factors. But do you really expect a defense that has been absolutely abused by teams like Vandy and Missouri to have a great performance? In my opinion, its likely to be the exact opposite. I think Nebraska will abuse our DBs and take extreme advantage of our injuries on the DL. I think they will gash us very often for massive amounts of yards.

That being said, I do see us winning this game. I think our offense will be able to score a lot of points. Dobbs, Kamara, Kelly, Malone, JJ and the boys will be too much for Nebraska. I think we lose the stats battle, but win the game.

If Hurd hadnt left the team, the offense would not be as good IMO, Williams? He was a diva that could not earn his starting spot. They both are quitters. Our team is much better off without them. Injuries have played a huge part in the season. We shall see next year if they truly were as big of a factor as we thought. About the Vandy game, this team didnt know it? Dobbs, Barnett and Sutton were there in 2014 when we barely managed to beat them by a TD. Sorry but there is NO and I mean NO excuse for the statistical and scoreboard dominance Vandy accomplished against Tennessee. It wasnt a brain fart. It was an ass whipping by a severely inferior team that is very well coached.

So in summary, if we take 3 weeks off before the vandy and usc games we would be 10-2 and considered a much better team?

Oh and...how bout them Titans!

And you really should have left those last two sentences out, just dumb.

Facts suck

Besides a few offensive.placing, which don't mean alot, that novel os filled with opinions.

Here are similar opinions. How would we look with out all the players giving up and injuries. We might look like we did against ap state...eveidence : first game against ap state

Opinion: vandy wanted to be 6-6 and bowl eligible worse than we wanted to be 9-3 and in the sugar bowl. Eveidence: second half of vandy game

So many words...

TL: DR

Time allows us to study film, strategize, and evolve our defensive schemes versus playing catchup with new players with no reps due to injury bug.

That's why we will be much improved and whoop dey ass Dec 30.

I agree. Book it.

We play better in bowl games because they don't matter, which is the only reason Butch opens the playbook and plays aggressive.

Also helps that we've played complete scrubs the last two years.

Northwestern wasn't a scrub, they were a 10 win team and ranked in the top 15. Outmatched? Yes. But not a pushover. Iowa on ther other hand, they were indeed pretty bad. But considering we were 6-6 in 2014 the matchup made sense.

like many UT and SEC fans you do yourself a great disservice by the hyperbole that is used in describing teams like UK, Vandy and Kentucky. These are not bad teams. They are just not top SEC teams.

its like comparing the current Alabama team to any other college team not fair. Most 3rd stringers in Bama would start on half the teams in the country. The bottom dwellers of the SEC would be perennial top 25 teams in most other conferences. This is the mistake a lot of UT and fans of SEC teams make they have so much pride in their own team they don't realize what an awesome conference we play in. We are su busy telling ourselves the other guy sucks that we don't realize he does not.

Most of the guys Mike Tyson knocked out in seconds would still knock out 90% of the guys walking the streets out in even less seconds. They didn't suck they just were not as good as the guy they were in the ring with. Replace hyperbole with perspective and the world makes a lot more sense.

First off the word is evidence. Opinions that can be backed up by fact. Saying Butch sucks because we should have won and we didn't is an opinion based on nothing but stupid. Saying we lost because of a variety of factors that can be easily proven.

App state was like I said a game one and cant be compared to a bowl game because its nothing like that. Preparing for a team that you have no film on and have no idea what they are is a lot harder than preparing for one you do. Game 1 you are coming in with a new team playing against a new team. Neither of you really KNOW your identity yet.

The young guys still haven't gotten reps and you are not gonna give them reps. In a bowl game you already have a good idea who your team is everyone is already in full game shape and have reps with the guys they are gonna play against. It is a totally different situation.

Bowl practice is the part of every teams season where you start getting the guys next year reps to see who is gonna be the man. Unlike a lot of teams though UT started bowl practice on the defensive side a bit early. Instead of guys having to be the next man up they are the man an at this point they know it and get the reps in practice. A good number of the guys that ended up playing big time snaps on defense for us normally only got scout team and special teams snaps in practice. it is shockingly clear how few people on these boars have never played organized Football at the collegiate level. and have no idea what type of preparation it takes to step on that field and how big a mountain it is to climb from 3rd or 4th string to starting for most positions.

Especially on Defense and the Oline it takes a lot more than talent to play. Skill positions like WR and to a lesser extent RB and TE can be played at a high level on pure physical talent alone. At those positions your responsibilities are fairly simple. you run the ball, you catch the ball. In a pinch you have to block one guy.

Defense is a different ball game. Oline and QB different ball game. If a WR is having a bad game or tuns the wrong route the QB can check down. A WR does not block its rarely noticed. He drops a ball he drops the ball everyone blames the QB. This is probably why a lot of WR's tend to be prima donnas more so than other positions.

On defense all it takes on any given play is one guy messing up does not matter who if the offense notices you get roasted. Defense is harder than Offense period because everyone on defense has to be accountable on every single play. This is why injuries on Defense are a lot more devastating than those on offense.

You take the top 3 Defensive tackles of any team in the country. Then put them up against any decent rushing team and those teams are gonna have a blast no matter who the coach is. Especially when your linebacking corps and secondary is the walking wounded also.

Glad you have pumped yourself up for the MCB. All points are a bunch of garbage meant to somehow excuse the man at the top for losing to usc and vandy and looking like crap against two lesser teams and making not good teams look really good with our historically bad defense. If Butch can fix it in the off season great, I have my doubts.

But hey at least they are wearing smoking greys because east Tennessee loves arson right?

I would never have gotten that far without this post. You are correct; not only dumb, but very inappropriate given the magnitude and loss of life
Me stating something is stupid is inappropriate? sorry you live in a bubble but you might want ot look at whats happened across all of east TN the past couple months there have been many case of arson beyond the one local to knoxville that made big news. people lost their lives and that sucks. the fact that someone thought it was ok to do something that stupid is terrible and that is the point I made. it is a cancer this mentality we have. notice I say we because I am part of east TN and it affects me too.

I can sit here and act all high and mighty whenever someone brings something up calling it inappropriate or engage and talk about it see where the actual problem is. People don't want to talk about things because they don't want to take the time to understand so they are dismissive and hide behind words like yours. oh that's inappropriate blah blah blah. This is true in these forums. People think in 150 characters or less. Everything is a meme or a catchphrase with no thought into whats really going on or digging deeper. It is irresponsible. I find that inappropriate.

Josh Dobbs has had arguably one of the best seasons as a QB in UT history. How many threads have there been on that maybe one or 2? That is sad but there are 10 or more topics a day about firing coaches or what new coaches we should hire. I find that inappropriate.

Do yourself a favor google east TN arson there has been a lot more than one case in the last 2 months. Had you dug deeper you would have known that, instead of having a knee jerk reaction thinking I was talking about a specific situation.

I learned a valuable lesson in life a while back, never argue a bad position. Comparing people complaining about a football team to arsonist because of recent events it just dumb.
There have been several threads praising doubts. I wouldnt care if Butch was fired today and I got hammered after the USC game for saying I would lose respect for Butch if he benched Dobbs.

Then maybe losing their starting QB and a top WR won't change the most important fact my friends.

That fact is that we just don't have any top DT's available.

When we're forced by injuries to play DE's at the DT position it makes running the ball against us very easy.

Then we're forced to bring a S up in the box to help stop the run and that opens up the passing game against us.

Our D won't be good again until we can get some good DT's back on the field.

I still believe we can WIN this bowl game because I don't think they can stop Dobbs and company.

Go get the WIN boys!!!

VFL...GBO!!!

Hopefully we get a nice bowl win and a good vibe going into the offseason...but it will still be a very disappointing season. It is what it is. The injuries were huge..and hit us hard.

As far as Butch...he's probably our best bet going forward. He can at least recruit at a high level so the best we can do is cross our fingers and hope for the best. But if he doesn't win big next year...he MUST be gone if this is a program serious about being one of the big boys again. 8-4 should NEVER be good enough for a heritage program like UT. A school that has over half it's games on network TV and the other half on a major cable network.

I'm torn on whether Butch is a great recruiter OR the program is selling itself and another coach could do just as well if not better in that regard...but another "blah' season with losses to Vandy and S. Carolina and i'm willing to find out.
