Butch: The Money Year Man

No one said all were garbage. Just said when still have some if his recruits.

The problem isn't most of the Dooley guys that stayed, it's the vast majority of the guys that left/transferred because they were poor players

This happened once and will only ever happen once. Kiffin left simply because...

1. He's a douche bag.
2. USC is where he wanted to always be. It was a mix of both. No other coach would leave Tennessee, unless they meet those two. Butch, he doesn't really have a dream school as far as I know. He doesn't really have ties to another elite program. And Michigan? He didn't go to Michigan, and I don't think he's ever coached there, so no. Butch won't build the program to just leave, especially when TN is on top, there isn't a any programs that outclass it. It's top 10.

This pretty much sums it up for me.

Butch had 60 days to sign his first class.

No one in their right mind could construe that 2013 was his first year.

Butch Jones is in his 2nd year here at Tennessee.

Let's be fair.

Next year is year 3.

What? This is his third season no matter how you slice it. 2013, 2014, and now 2015. He did have a short time to finish up and sign his first class and he did a nice job....signed Dobbs, North and held onto JRM just to name 3 impact players.

But make no mistake, that was year one....when he signed that class, began changing the culture, began laying the foundation. He's had 3 signing classes, 3 offseasons, 3 spring practices, is conducting his 3rd fall camp....its year 3. He now needs to produce wins to go along the other great things he's "produced" in the program.

Assuming year 3 goes well it also will bring a big question with. How long before he leaves? I for one don't believe he would be inclined to go anywhere but I can see the media putting out rumor after rumor of him talking to other schools. While it will be annoying it will also be worth the headache once he starts winning.

Let's hope we're successful enough this year that Butch is talked about as being hired as a coach at other places. That's a measure of success.

I truly hope this is Butch's year. However, I also fear that he would leave if he was able to bring Tenn back to success...Does he have a "dream job" out there waiting to throw money at him when he shows what he can do?

He does have a history of leaving after successful year 3s.

A lot of you also said Kiffin wasn't going anywhere...we saw how that worked out.

 Yes because Central Michigan and Cincinnati are such destination jobs.

Also, didn't the AD recently extend CBJ's contract after a 7-6 season?

Why would they do that if they weren't the least bit worried about the year 3 exit history?

CBJ's recruiting efforts over the last 2 years, considering where we have been, is phenomenal. Developing, growing, and managing the talent is still up for grabs. Many on the board talked about 2016 being the year. That seems to have changed. It is interesting to see that many are worried now that we will be looking for a new coach in 2016. Oh how things have changed...for the good. It's a great time to be a TN Vol. CBJ is the REAL DEAL. I've heard it personally from many former lettermen, CPF, and many more including a visit to his hometown to meet one of my college buddies as we met at a local establishment owned by CBJ's longtime friend. We look forward to many great seasons with him doing great things with the Vols I hope.

Yeah, but look where he was leaving from after those two successful year 3s.....Central Michigan and Cincinnati....he was leaving to better his situation both times. Tennessee may not be the most desirable coaching spot in the country, but it is definitely a destination job, especially now that he's done such a good job restoring the talent, increasing the academic standing, improving the visibility and re-energizing the fanbase.

There is no question he must perform this year. This is his 3rd year. I think some of the expectations on this forum are a little lofty, but we have plenty of talent to have a very good year.

We are still a little light on experience and depth. 3 years of putting in his system and two full classes of recruits -- Its time to see a big jump in performance on the field. 8 wins is the mark for me.

If he wins, he will get paid and he ain't going anywhere.

I would argue that Tennessee has fallen from the "Destination Job" category. He is working to bring it back.

You would? Then what's the argument? I think the work he's put in, as I stated earlier, has brought it back to a "destination job" already...

Tradition? Check
Facilities? Check
Recruiting base? Check
Competitive salary for HC and staff? Check
APR/academics up to par/support? Check
Rabid fanbase? Check
Competitive/talented roster? Check
Ability to win championship(s)? Check
Positive program momentum? Check

If we start winning big, I have no doubt that money will not be an issue. And, as we all know, that's what drives the truck.

Calm down sparky.

Finish up? He didn't even get a chance to get started.

60 days is just 16% of a recruiting cycle. Call it what you want but those who have been around a while understand.

Next year is year 3...period.

Dooley understands "year zero." Luckily we now have a coach that wouldn't use such an excuse. Players started buying into and learning his system that first year. The class of '13 includes Dobbs, Sutton, North, JRM, Smith, and Vereen. Their contributions are real. This is year 3 no matter how people want to spin it.

My only concern is I hope (and think) Butch will be a little more aggressive in his in-game decisions, especially against Florida this year. I felt that we played very tight and not to lose as opposed to taking it to them. They handed us the game and we wouldn't take it. If we get up, I would love to see us put on more steam, as the General once said. We should come out absolutely pissed against Florida, Georgia and Mizzou this year. We owe them all. I hope the players remember the disappointments and use it as fuel to bury them all.

The time period for coaches doing that is over. Coaches (especially under 60) are all mercenaries looking for new opportunities. Never think otherwise.

They are NOT ALL mercenaries. Winning coaches stay for long periods of time at numerous schools. Sure, money talks, but some guys like their jobs right where they are.
