Butch, Shoop and few tidbits ..

I don't know if Butch can lead us to the promise land, but I want him to have his fair shot. If he can take this situation and still get us to a 8-9 win season, honestly it would be pretty incredible. I hope Thig stays and I hope if Strip does retire he takes an administrative position. Good riddance to Martinez and Mahoney and I wouldn't lose sleep over losing Azzanni either. We need to speed up the Blackburn hire process. He needs to be here ASAP.

Here's something else to ponder. Let's say we go into next year with the following new coaches: OC, OL, QB, LB, DL and DB. Does anyone think the new hires can get on the same page, in a very short period of time, and salvage 8 or 9 wins next year? That's a lot of new hires for one year. Of the six positions listed, LB may be the only one to come back next year.

So as long as there's chaos in the coaching staff, Butch should get a free pass?

Give me a break! Coaching Staffs change all the time.

There has been a lot of chatter, mostly by people at UT and some media members about unhappiness within coaching staff that lead to a failure of 2016. Here are few things that are being said by some reporters and people at UT. (No insider information here. Just compilation of stuff from Podcasts, informal talks with local media members and UTK students who claim to have heard similar rumblings)

a) Butch is reportedly very unhappy with the lack of AD situation. He has been telling people it has been hurting recruiting and OC hire. The internal promotion is not by choice for Butch, rather outsider big candidates' unwillingness to join the staff without some assurance from AD on stability. Butch has been telling local media members during informal communications to look at staff other SEC teams have assembled. His situation is like he is almost taking a knife to a gun fight against Alabama, comparing the supporting staff.

b) Shoop never fully got support from Martinez, Thigpen or Stripling. The three reportedly felt like Shoop undermined their authority with micromanaging things. Things got worse as the season progressed. Stripling will retire, Martinez will be let go. Thigpen might look elsewhere but Shoop and Butch have tried to convince him to stay due to his recruiting powers.

c) After season Butch did look for other options as he was uncertain about his status once new AD was hired. UT higher-ups assured him that he won't be let go upon hire of new AD.

d) Don Mahoney will be let go after signing day. Azzanni is looking elsewhere and will leave after signing day. Larry Scott will be new OC. Butch has tried to do a CO-OC thing with both but Azzanni wants full control of the offense. Funny as Butch wanted to bring a name but he couldn't land one.

e) The media reports of Butch not willing to relinquish control of offense are wrong.

I think Mahoney likely will be gone by end of this week.

I would not be surprised at Z leaving, if he can find someone to take him. He tried to leave last off season and couldn't find a job.

I have a different feel on Shoop / Thigpen. If Thispen gets an offer to leave would not surprise me if he did so.

But both Z and Thig could remain if they don't get offers elsewhere.. Don't see Butch running them

Zero. My point exactly

I get your point, Butch has been better for the program than Dooley. I agree with that. IMO Butch has already peaked as the HC of TN. If 9 wins and excuses is your ceiling for expectations then Butch is your guy and I won't be able to change your mind. I consider it as being mediocre but that's just my opinion. I still remember when we were elite so I'm a little bias with my expectations.

I can see where AD situation not ideal. Pure NONSENSE that it is still not a done deal. Am ok with some shifting out of coaches, but overhaul is not ideal. Gives too much smoke=fire credence.

Yes. The OC might be Larry Scott and he is already on the staff. OL might be Walt Wells and he is already on the staff. DB coach might end up being Barlow and he has worked under Shoop before for a few years. I don't think Thigpen will go anywhere (Martinez was the source of discontent on the defensive side and Strip was already thinking about retirement before Shoop came on board). You will probably just be looking at a new QB coach and DL coach. I don't think there's any question that the defensive staff will put a better defense on the field next season (with some luck in regards to injuries). The system on offense is fine and having a new play caller might not be a bad thing. There's good talent at QB to replace Dobbs and Kelly will be a very productive back. I think everything will be fine as long as the injury bug doesn't hit hard again.

LSU, Bama, and UGA say hello!!!

Bama doesn't and LSU would quibble since Miles last two FULL seasons ended with 8 and 9 wins respectively. Good chance he wouldn't have built 7 on the two wins he had when canned.

UT is NOT known as a "Business School"...

It is MOST FAMOUS for Forensics...and there are MANY "dead bodies"...and not just @thebodyfarm! (that thing still on that back hill? I remember many drinks with the folks up there...

Sorry, but the Haslam School of Business is highly regarded. Believe some of their programs are top 10 or top 20. Supply Chain comes to mind as one.

No fan on the street that doesn't consider the business side first is satisfied with 9 wins and excuses for the ceiling. Some think CBJ has something left in the tank while others think he has reached his peak.

Since we aren't the ones in charge we have to take a wait and see approach.

We all have pretty much the same info to base our opinions from, we just draw different conclusions.

I've only seen a few that dislike CBJ as a person(probably don't know him, I don't)the rest of the ones that dislike him base it off his in game coaching decisions(he has made some questionable calls), might as well hope for the best.

Question for those that may know:
How many "analysts"does UT have?

Bama has 9. Clemson 5 or 6. These are full time paid staff that work behind the scenes breaking down film, gameplans, etc.

Uhhh...probably would benefit if you to do a little research on HCB at UT. Top ten nationally in both Supply Chain and Analytics, Supply Chain is world ranked according to one esteemed publication. Accounting program one of the nation's best public or private, top 5 pass rate on CPA exam nationally.

Forensics is highly ranked also, good old Dr. Bass...

One of the dumbest things I've ever read here. If we fired a coach after back to back 9 win seasons, no one would take this job.

No one would take the UT job? That is dumb. No one would take the UT job with the current group of incompetents in control? That is true and how we ended up with a coach in way over his head.

Also, for all you deluded coach worshipers who are white knighting for Butch and trying to convince people that a Top25 Power 5 school would take him....I give you Purdue.

For those salivating over 9 wins, who were they against, who were his losses against, what were preseason expectations, did he meet those expectations? Congrats, 9 wins and you just witnessed him pinnacle in the SEC.

Sounds to me Butch isn't even being given a fair shot to correct things this offseason.

Maybe they were afraid he would hire another over the hill swimming instructor as OC? Butch is his own worst enemy...then again you could say that about UT Athletics. So it is a marriage made in heaven.

To me, it's a pretty strong indictment of the kind of coaching our guys have been receiving at these positions when Jones can't even get somebody to take them off his hands.

This is the same power structure that allowed Jones to hire Shoop and make him the 8th highest paid assistant in the country.

Seems like we have a head coach that can't manage his locker room or his staff at this point.

Your comment was that no coach would take the job, obviously not true. I am not for firing Butch, just because of the incompetence at UT. Apathy is the next step.

At no point have I ever said that nor do I think CBJ should or will be fired.
