There has been a lot of chatter, mostly by people at UT and some media members about unhappiness within coaching staff that lead to a failure of 2016. Here are few things that are being said by some reporters and people at UT. (No insider information here. Just compilation of stuff from Podcasts, informal talks with local media members and UTK students who claim to have heard similar rumblings)

a) Butch is reportedly very unhappy with the lack of AD situation. He has been telling people it has been hurting recruiting and OC hire. The internal promotion is not by choice for Butch, rather outsider big candidates' unwillingness to join the staff without some assurance from AD on stability. Butch has been telling local media members during informal communications to look at staff other SEC teams have assembled. His situation is like he is almost taking a knife to a gun fight against Alabama, comparing the supporting staff.

b) Shoop never fully got support from Martinez, Thigpen or Stripling. The three reportedly felt like Shoop undermined their authority with micromanaging things. Things got worse as the season progressed. Stripling will retire, Martinez will be let go. Thigpen might look elsewhere but Shoop and Butch have tried to convince him to stay due to his recruiting powers.

c) After season Butch did look for other options as he was uncertain about his status once new AD was hired. UT higher-ups assured him that he won't be let go upon hire of new AD.

d) Don Mahoney will be let go after signing day. Azzanni is looking elsewhere and will leave after signing day. Larry Scott will be new OC. Butch has tried to do a CO-OC thing with both but Azzanni wants full control of the offense. Funny as Butch wanted to bring a name but he couldn't land one.

e) The media reports of Butch not willing to relinquish control of offense are wrong.

a) Butch should be happy about the AD situation or he more than likely wouldn't have been here after the Vandy debacle.

c) More evidence at the absolute incompetence within the UT upper administration. Why give him any assurances at all? This is a guy who wouldn't get another Top 25 school to hire him. Why are you worried he might leave? Oh, because you are complete incompetent morons. Also, how do you bring in a good AD and tell them...ohh yeah you are hitched to Lyle, we gave him assurances. WTF?!?! Until the upper administration is completely cleaned out, I have no hope UT will ever give a damn about competing for titles in any sport.

e) Yeah no one believes that. Butch is a crazy control freak and anyone who thinks he is going to change his offensive system when he has his back up against the wall is kidding themselves. It is what it is.

I don't understand the delay for AD hire especially with a good option just down the road.

The UT upper administration is so poorly run by incompetent a$$ hats, if I was Blackburn I don't know if I want it.

The people above Jones have handed him coal to make diamonds and rocks to make lemonade with. Totally ridiculous and unfair to do that to someone who is trying literally almost 24 hours a day to make us competitive with Alabama. That pisses me off more than the 2 losses. This situation is insane. Hand cuffs are on the one person that fans have had a bullseye on. If Butch is ever fired, ftr I believe that he will get us back, no coach with any sense will come here unless something changes with people higher up the totem pole imo. Those people contribute to losses as much as anyone else does imo.

One of the dumbest things I've ever read here. If we fired a coach after back to back 9 win seasons, no one would take this job.

Good grief man he would not be fired with a 9-4 record with wins over Tech, Florida and Georgia regardless. You mention evidence then mention no top 25 school would hire him lol.

It is 2 sided. Butch will conveniently use them as an excuse.

They weren't on the filed against Vandy and USC though.

Nah he won't make an excuse. He has every right to say things since he wants to win probably more than you and me both. It's a travesty what those BOT folk have done.

The UT AD stuff is pretty spot on. The coaching turmoil and Azzanni info is a bit embellished. There will not be 5 coaching changes. No, CBJ is not a power hungry douche he is actually a very nice, pleasant guy who the players like.

He has the right. But he is a used car salesman, so you need to take it with a grain of salt.

Players were on the field. We are trying to upgrade our staff. Not having an AD is the difference for this next year and beyond.

Maybe I misread the op but the gist of what he wrote made me feel that this AD situation is hurting our efforts *right now* to upgrade our staff. Which would effect recruiting, developing players thereby our winning games next year and beyond etc.

I don't think that your point is appropriate because Butch is attempting to do things to win games but is being limited by people above him. That is a fact not an excuse.

Bama? I assume you mean Shula and no he did not. UGA and LSU have a lot to prove if those were good decisions or not. They may be disasters so that's not really a great point

Your comment was that no coach would take the job, obviously not true. I am not for firing Butch, just because of the incompetence at UT. Apathy is the next step.
