Butch says it takes 6 to 7 years to build a program in the SEC

I look at it this way. The extra years refer to being a consistent year by year contender for the playoffs and national championship. That is not to say the Vols rising to the top cannot happen next year.

not sure what you're driving at here. make your point, let's stop with all the cloak and dagger....

what are you wanting to get at already?

Not a difficult concept. We're paying the guy over 4 million now for an 8 win season. What does he get for a 12 win season? How many coaches get a one million dollar raise in three years for going 5-7, 7-6, and 8-4? My question is what's he going to ask for if he goes 12-0? 6 million? 7 million?

there's a whole thread dedicated to this topic.

and if you think he got the raise this year FOR going 8-4, then you're not paying attention to the big picture.

Is his pay out of line with the other coaches in the conf? Are you mad at the big number or what coaches are paid? It's kinda confusing

Currently out of 14 coaches where would you put him? He's ahead of Stoops and Mason. So where should his salary be? That's what I'm asking. Seems a little high for what he has accomplished. And, if it is this high for accomplishing very little how high does it go if he goes 12-0. Higher than Saban's who's won 4 NC's. Butch's hype seems to have garnered him a higher salary than he deserves it appears to me.

1. you think he makes too much money.
2. you want to know what we think he should make.
3. you have no other criteria for salary excep w/l record.

you need to go read the thread on this topic.

I think Butch is great at selling himself and coach speak. If you pay high salaries for coach speak ability then yes he should be paid highly.

His pay is right in the middle where it should be. Yes, of he wins a NC he will get a nice raise. That's kinda the way things work

The rest of your post is bad and you should feel bad

I understand all that. But now he's saying he needs 6-7 years. So, we give him a raise for scaling back the goals? If we go 9-3 next year does he get another raise? And, then what if he goes 7-5 the year after. Do we get to cut his salary?

Well gee. Why don't you tell me how I should feel on all my posts? I'd really take it to heart.

People not only taking this quote way to seriously but also they're acting like Butch has been driving this point home since he arrived. Truth be told it was a one time thing that has been blown way out of proportion.

Shame on you KB. The other dunderheads are expected to be...well dunderheads.

So this applies to nobody else but Butch? He should be the only coach to get that much time because of what? Is it because he is so good he managed to lose to Dooley head to head, or because he managed to blow 3 games that were already won this year?

Lol... My advice is to never watch another press conference or interview with a coach.

Nobody gets that much time. Everybody knows that. Butch knows that. It was just a comment by a coach. It wasn't a subliminal message.

Interesting that Hymens took Jones to mean 6-7 years when Jones said it takes 6-7 years.

From Hymens' article
Tell that to Florida’s Jim McElwain, who won the SEC East in his first year. Tell that to Auburn’s Gus Malzahn, who won the SEC and played for the national championship in his first year. Tell that to Nick Saban, who won the SEC in his second year at LSU and the national title in his third year at Alabama. Tell that to Auburn’s Gene Chizik, who won a national championship in his second year. Tell that to Urban Meyer, who won a national title in his second year at Florida and in his third year Ohio State. Tell that to Georgia’s Mark Richt, who won the SEC in his second year, when he had his only one-loss team in Athens. Tell that to Ole Miss’ Hugh Freeze, who had the Rebels ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation in his third and fourth seasons. Tell that to James Franklin, who won nine games in his second and third seasons at Vanderbilt after the Commodores had 28 consecutive seasons with at least six losses. Tell that to Bobby Petrino, who won 10 and 11 games in his third and fourth seasons at Arkansas. Tell that to Steve Spurrier, who had the best record in the SEC in his first year at Florida (1990) after the tradition-less Gators had posted at least five losses four years in a row before Spurrier’s arrival.

haha. Tell that to chizick...who got fired a year later...
tell that to malzahn who is on the hot seat.

Maybe nobody has broken the news to jimmy yet.

Franklin is 14-11 in the big 10. I guess the big 10 must be a better conference.

If Richt doesn't win 11 and a conference title in year one than it also must mean the ACC is far tougher than the SEC where he did it in year one.

Bobby Petrino...are you effin with me? You want to trade Butch for Bobby Petrino? That's who you want running your program? Jeebus crispy...

The funny thing is that of the examples Jimmy gives, about 4 of them weren't actually sustaining success by year 7. They were either moving on or on the hot seat.

There's also a big difference in a car that hit a pothole and one whose previous coach was basically this guy
