They're pretty close on who was considered because they're burning up their own cellphones contacting sources, both agents and folks inside the programs...asking, asking, asking. So they get a pretty good picture.

But what they don't hear about are the quiet temperature-check conversations between AD offices and agents, conversations that are shut down quickly. And since the media don't hear about them, we don't hear about them.

When Butch says he's not going anywhere, that he's home, you should believe him. His agent certainly does. And very quietly takes him off the radars of ADs in the hunt for coaches.

it goes back to what i've said before...there's no winning, just different levels of suck.

Nah, not for me. I think the outcomes of bowl games outside of the playoff are pretty unimportant, period. Glaring good or bad coaching decisions can be signs for the future, but barring those, we could get blown out by Northwestern and you won't see me jumping on Butch or thinking less of him because of that game. I'll be the one telling people to chill out, whether it's to people thinking we have the best team and best coach ever because we win, or to people shredding Butch because we lose--shocking as that might be to some.

I've seen this perspective from several people in VN, VKA, and it never makes sense to me.

Nothing in football is "important," because it's a game. A pastime.

But within that context, every game is "important" when it involves the team you care most about. A "W" is a "W," and an "L" is an "L." A lot of "W"s can lead to more "W"s in the form of championship and playoff games. But even those games are unimportant, because they really just come down to bragging rights. And since you get some % of bragging rights from each "W," we're now just talking about degrees of value.

So yeah, I totally don't get this "no games are important except those games over there" perspective. It's a false distinction, to me. I suspect it is to most Vols fans.

Obviously I want us to win, which is why I'll be watching. And like I said, it's important in the sense that the extra practices can help develop our young players and success can give them more confidence. But during the season, we're playing to win the East and ultimately win the conference. Bragging rights over Northwestern mean next to nothing to me. These bowls are more fun celebrations of the season than anything else.

This is my point. Those games, by definition, are about much more than "we beat you" bragging rights.

These aren't. That's why you see teams like 2008 Alabama clearly give zero f's about beating Utah.

Like, come on. These bowl games are like NIT games. If you're equating that with conference play because "football is just a game anyway and it's not as important as other areas of life," you're making it way too broad.

But really, they're not about much more than "we beat you" bragging rights. Think about it. An SEC Championship is just a "we beat all y'all" and a NC is just "we beat ALL you sob's". That's all it is. Utterly unimportant except for that. :)

It's just a pastime. Therefore, importance comes down to being happy about your team. In that sense, every "W" is nice, and every "L" sucks, and the rest is just details.

I thought about that, but I think there's a huge difference between bragging rights over one random team and bragging rights as champions.

I just don't think you can take much from them. If someone presents to me NIT championships as proof Johnny Dawkins is a good coach, I'm going to dismiss it because it's just a contest between teams that have been eliminated from real contention.

I have little doubt he wants to be here, I believe that when he says it. I also don't believe he's at the point that many schools of equal or superior stature as UT would consider him.

Newsflash....no one is coming after Butch Jones....YET.

He hasn't done anything to make anyone come after him yet, but wait till after next season. If it goes as well as it could, his stock will rise.

While I think he has done a really good job of rebuilding, and is about where I thought he should be at this point in time, most outsiders will not appreciate how low the program was when he started.

Another season will change that, if everything goes well.

Outsiders? Hell, we have some "fans" on this site who don't appreciate it. Some act like we should've been in the playoffs this and last year.

Losses in "meaningless" bowl games played a key role in CPF's firing.

Disagree if you like, but that is a fact.
