Butch makes me nothing but mad now

Eddie, you are a special snowflake. You are decidedly not prescient, rarely insightful, and almost never 'spot-on.' But you are energetic, and devoted, and certainly special, in your very own way.

VFL-82, I was prescient in the first sentence of the OP. But being prescient about Vol football and VolNation is small beer in the extreme.

(In b4 - the "just enjoy the damn win." No, you don't have to bask in the glory of beating an OVC team when you should be in play-off discussion!! Go win the NIT and have fireside chats with Cuonzo. Bring hot chocolate.)

I think everyone has to share the blame on the Jalen Hurd fiasco but I think the guy making $4M per annum has earned the right to shoulder the vast majority of the blame. Any real coach would have done something about it.

I'm so sick and tired of this paper tiger offense. We know how quickly it will fold like a cheap tent in the wind against even a mediocre SEC defense. Will Vandy completely shut our game down? I said Arkansas was the measuring stick last year - if Butch was in the West right now, oh lawdy. He's tenure has marked the weakest the SECE has ever been since divisional play. Backing into the East this year makes the 2007 Vols look like the 1985 Bears. I strongly defended the 2007 team's right to be there; this one will be hard to defend. Will those who absolutely piled-on the 2007 squad show any consistency?

The con-job against Northwestern will grate on me forever. I hate everything about that now.

The "eff them all" sideline explosion confirms Butch is exactly where Boro-Vol says he is. Any good coach with real confidence laughs at the boo-birds in that situation - understands that every SEC fan base has mouthbreathers, clueless students.

I have been one of Butch's staunchest champions that he does everything right Monday - Friday (I was probably the first to say he's got a lot to prove on Saturdays). However, the super, once-in-a-generation legacy class has inflated his Monday to Friday stats. His recruiting this year, in a banner year for Tennessee talent, is demonstrating he ain't getting it done against the top-6 SEC teams.

The man and his BSiA has fielded two teams that should have competed for the play-offs. Neither will. In any mediocre year for the East, he would not make the SECCG. It would almost be fitting for Florida and LSU not to reschedule.

Doesn't matter that Butch does nothing but make me mad now. I'm not Haslam or Thunder; I'm just one of the guys who keeps folks employed at the alumni office. I'm trying to think what could make me feel like Butch is the man again:

1. Own the Jalen Hurd situation and give the fans a professional accounting of what actually happened
2. Win out convincingly
3. Lock down this state in recruiting; take no verbals as gold and go win back those recruits
4. Show that the gap v Bama wasn't as shocking as we saw in Knoxville (if we do back into the SECCG)
5. Humble yourself before the fanbase that has given you, frankly, what has been an internship and a lot of OJT in a big-time program for $4M per annum

Eddie, it really doesn't matter to me what Butch says about our fans anymore than it matters to me what our fans say about him at any given time.

What matters to me is our coaches recruiting more physical cornerbacks who can drive through a tackle like Gaulden and Warrior instead of getting abused because of their frail size. In the Bama game, they were easily blocked out of outside running plays that attacked the corners.

What matters to me is recruiting more depth at linebacker and overall strength and conditioning to be able to compete in a physical game against Bama or LSU. Watching that game last night should have convinced most of us that we are not currently physical enough to hold our own in a game against the best in our conference. Not even if we were injury free right now.

What matters to me is recruiting strong, physical guys up front on the defensive and offensive lines where games are won and lost. There has been an adequate amount of time passed to improve the physicality of our O-Line through recruiting, we once again began this season weak and fragile up front.

Recruiting and developing those recruits at a high level is way more important to me than personalities of fans or coaches. If Butch does those things well, even his thin skin won't be a nuisance to him. But until he does, he needs to learn the critics will always be present as they are in every fanbase that believes their school has the tradition and facilities of remaining successful in football.

Wow... Sunday preaching at its best.

A lot of good points for and against the state of the program. To me, it is a bit more simple, this team suffered a huge hit with all the injuries, and that changed the dynamics. Very difficult to expect them to compete at the highest level. So, I tend to cut Butch a lot of slack in that regard.

But... as well, man it is difficult to watch the stubbornness Butch has for something that clearly does not work... and saying that Oregon runs the same plays... well, take took at the Ducks, they suck this year. Eventually, Butch has to learn to adjust or fail and ultimately be run off. Expectations should be very high year in and out... 10-2 minimum including trips to Atlanta.

Against Florida, the offense didn't actually start scoring until about 4.00 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. I'm rather astonished at how that went down.

To me, there was nothing special in the offense regarding Georgia. In fact, basically Barnett and Juauan won that game and it took a miracle. Can you imagine if we don't pull off that Hail Mary and where the masses would be now?

I've seen too many times this offense get snapped in half when defenses push into the box. And that's with a Josh Dobbs back there who bails us out of a lot. We saw what happened against Alabama. To say nothing of Appy State and Ohio.

7:29 in the 3rd. Try again.

You should get a lot of likes, bravo. Being second in the thread and inviting the sheep is a solid, solid LIKE recipe.

It won't bring back any championships to UT.

PS - stated clearly I'm unimportant and my anger means nothing.

Really? Then go find David Lee Roth, and make another crap album. Then, your anger can mean less than nothing.

I think we just need to move on. We don't need more of a soap opera than it already is. I think now we all know Hurd was a problem but Butch was trying to manage it and it wasn't working.

At this point, the soap opera mentality has become so ingrained, we might as well give the damn thing a title.

"All My Vols."

"Days of our Vols"

"Peyton Manning Place"

"As the Grumors turn"

"General Horse****"

The floor is open for other nominations.

It just doesn't always work out. The starting 22 at the beginning of the year could play with anybody, sometimes things just dont go your way, like this year. Johnny's quote about the legions of the miserable still ring true. Fact is the program is in much better shape than it was during the dark times, and still has an upward trajectory.

This requires definitive proof. Not having the SECE wrapped up with Team 120 and given the state of the East doesn't bode well. Many feel this may well be Butch's best team at Tennessee.

Proving that we still have an upward trajectory will help ameliorate my anger - for what it's worth. For me, watching the loss to USCe, watching the dumpster fire drama during the week, watching in-state 5* talent go somewhere else suggests we've peaked. Beating TTech does nothing, for me, to alleviate those concerns. It was great timing for the team to have this game though given the soap opera we all lived through this week.

Listen... I have been a lifelong Volunteer fan. I remember the 86 Sugar Bowl, the miracle at South Bend, the National Championship of 98. I suffered through the decline toward the end of the Philip Fulmer year... the dumpster fires of Lane kiffen & Derek Dooley. I've enjoyed watching the return of a team that has some life & some fight that we've seen since Butch Jones has taken over. Is the team where we Vols fans or the team themselves want to see them yet? No. They're working to get there. It takes time. If you can't be patient, on behalf of Vols fans eveywhere.... please stop calling yourself a vol fan, & go find a new team. You won't be missed.
