Butch Jones and Mark Stoops 4th year coaches

If CBJ wants to know what a season-killing loss to UK would feel like, he can ask Dooley. He would be back next year with a lot less support and a lot more criticism. Fans, alums, boosters, former players and media would turn against him, and he would find himself caught in a riptide of negativity. Eliminating UT from the SECE championship race by losing to UK in Neyland for the first time in 32 years would create a toxic environment that would be miserable for everyone. Fortunately, there is an antidote-- win. Just win.

A loss to Kentucky would not be that big of a shock. Especially given the injuries to our DL and JRM and possibly Sutton. The defense is pretty decimated right now.

Understood but losing to Kentucky, no matter how good they are and no matter how beat up we are, will always carry a humongous degree of shock value!

Even if they gash our defense, our offense should be able to win a shootout. We simply have more playmakers and we can spread them all over the field. We just can't have TOs.

Even if it were.... Jones owns the injury rate now that it has been higher than average for 3 straight years.

This year has been really bad for injuries, but especially the quality of player being injured.

But are we sure that the injuries have been a big problem in previous years? It doesn't seem that way anecdotally. Not to me anyway.

What data are you using to compare our injuries to the NCAA average over previous years?

If we lose one more game, there is mathematically no way for us to win the East and go to Atlanta.

Have some chill, bro

This is a must win in order to win the (incredibly weak) East, which was supposed to be the next step. Forget being the favorite next year, we were the runaway favorites for the East this year and look where we're at. We are in a must win situation for the next 3 games in order to win the East.

I'm aware of that. I'm just trying to accurately define how low the expectations are for this program under Butch at this point for what I believe is a majority of our fanbase. I believe they'd be all good with 9-5 this year.

Understood buy for me personally, I take the injury situation into account. Like I said, if Sutton and AK are back then there are very few excuses in losing this game.

butch could win out, upset bama in SEC and some here would ***** if he loses the bowl game on a missed fg

No.
We win out. Beat bama by 14. Play louisville in citrus bowl, win by 10, and some would complain that Butch didnt use his timeouts properly.

Depends. If Sutton and AK return then no he doesnt. But if we are missing OBrien, KMac, Tuttle, JRM, AK and Sutton then thats going to be tough to overcome. He wouldnt get a huge pass but one cannot argue that those are major injuries to key positions.

No. Just plain, no. Despite the injuries to our team, we are putting the superior Talent on the field. This game is going to be very telling about the quality of the coaching. If we get out here tomorrow and blow this game comma it's going to be real damn hard to justify Butch Jones's tenure as our coach. If he loses to Kentucky tomorrow comma it will be because Mark Stoops is a superior coach.

I'm totally on board with the attrition rate being his responsibility but the injury rate? Injuries happen. We've been highly unlucky this year not just with the number but also with which particular players got injured. Does he own the injury distribution too?

You weaken your argument when you try and inflate it in this way.

No. Simply NO. Whether it is strength and conditioning, style of play, the recruit profile, or something else. Three consecutive years of above average injury rates is not "bad luck". It is a pattern of performance.

The advantage UT's offense has over the UK defense is wayyyyyy greater than any supposed advantage UK's offense has over the UT defense.

UT's 2nd and 3rd stringers on defense would be starters day one.

So you think Butch gets a pass on this game if the Vols lose?

Yes he should. He has substantially improved the team that he took over 3+ years ago. Unfortunately, the defense has been a revolving door much of the season due to injuries and a departure, particularly missing 2 of their all-star players most of the season, and often playing half of the defense with 2nd team or lower players. Having said that, if the offense doesn't improve significantly for these last few games, he needs to be looking for another OC, or next year he may follow the example that Les Miles from LSU set by sticking with his OC even though it wasn't working.

losing Saturday, again with a legit shot at the SEC e on the line, would be bad for CBJ.

not "he's gonna get fired at season's end" bad....but "lucy you got some splainin' to do" bad...

This is what it should be:

"Butch, you led us out of darkness. Many thanks and great job following Stooley. We're looking to take this to the next level now. Let me introduce you to Coach Gruden...."

But I know the narrative: Hambone, Bama Dave, waiting on Blackburn, Hurd was a cancer, injuries, eye discipline...

Please, for the love of God, give one logical reason that points to Gruden being a successful coach at the college level. Please. I just want to hear one legitimate reason.

Jon Gruden as coach of the Vols is laughable. Maybe he means Deuce Gruden?

This is "must win" number 21 out of 47 games Butch has coached in. I really think, we need to find a new term. Cause they aren't all must win games. Let's reserve the term must win for a game that might mean the coach will lose his job. Butch took over a program that was at an all-time low and has gone from 5-7 to 7-6 to 9-4 and is now on the cusp of a 10-3 season. Grant it, he hasn't done everything right, but what coach or human being has. Don't be like puppy fans and think you are going to win the NC every year. This season was always about taking the next step. Next year, we should be the favorite for the SEC east and if you only lose one game during the season, winning the SEC probably means you are in the final four. Let's just root on our team!

Well glad you got the "jones took over when the program was at an all time low and went from 5-7 to.....,,," in there! The first 999 times I saw someone post it I didn really get it!
But seriously don't you think it's time to put the present day , ( let me think how to word it)......shortcomings on the present day coach ?? Face it , being better than Dooley is not the greatest argument to use when promoting a coach!
