On Mike Bajakian, Josh Dobbs, and the difficulties of evaluating a mobile quarterback in practice - Vols Beat
"So in August, based on what Jones and Bajakian have said (and I wasnt here yet for the beginning, so based on what the other guys on the beat have told me about the first 10 days or so of camp) Justin Worley was very sharp on his throws, Dobbs missed on some of his routine passes and the dynamics of practice didnt give him much opportunity to prove the value of his mobility. Worley was named the starter with about two weeks still remaining before the opener. With Nathan Peterman performing well enough to be what the Vols considered a serviceable backup, the Vols moved to take advantage of the fact that Dobbs still had a redshirt year remaining.
Dobbs opened eyes once the season got to the first game week and he was running the second-team offense against the first-team defense in service periods and acting as Chuckie Keaton in Utah State prep and then as Fredi Knighten for Arkansas State. But by that point, it was Worleys job and he was playing very effectively, throwing for 520 yards and five touchdowns in the first two weeks. He had his flaws and made his mistakes, but most of the issues with the offense came from the porous offensive line and even many of Worleys mistakes came because he was under pressure or pressing to make plays. Couple that with the intangibles of Worley, a respected senior leader, and it was difficult for the Tennessee coaching staff to consider demoting him, despite the possibility that it might improve the offense."
