1. Great win, whether you want to talk about the fashion of it and the toughness and grit our guys showed, or if you enjoyed the whiny looks of Will Wade, or if you want to talk about the impact of that game on both SEC standings or NCAAT resume, it was a great win, a huge win, and one that hopefully the Vols can build off of.
2. Tennessee wasn’t perfect offensively, but considering that’s the #1 defense in the country by a wide margin and analytically one of the best in the past decade, Tennessee's offense had a great showing. LSU had not previously give up more than 92.6ppp to a team and Tennessee went for 99.1 tonight, they have the best offensive showing of any team to date against LSU, I’m not sure that’s something any of us saw coming. How did they do it? They took a bunch of 3’s and finally hit a good percentage of them, Vescovi obviously led the way going 5/11 and it’s great to see him really hunting his shot, he’s such a good shooter, he should be looking to put up 10 a game…JJJ was 2/6 which on the surface isn’t great but 33% you’ll take from him, in his last 4 games he’s 7/17 for 41%. When Tennessee didn’t shoot a 3 they got good post touches for the most part, Plavsic & Fulk combined to go 8-10 from the field.
3. On Plav & Fulk, and the whole front court merry go round, you gotta keep trying to stoke that fire with Plav and milk that for everything you can, because he’s the only post playing with any sort of consistency of late (who thought that would be the case?). You keep starting him, you give the other 3 guys a chance and just ride the hot hand on a nightly basis, the preference is JJJ plays quite a bit of 4 anyways and that helps space the floor a bit as he seems to be finding his shot. Fulk was efficient tonight, against Vandy not so much, BHH brought good energy and rebounding but his offensive game seems lacking, but the playing time should do him well, ON has seem to really hit a wall and is struggling of late.
4. We saw 1 player fall out of the rotation as things start to head towards the home stretch, Bailey didn’t log a single minute tonight which is a first…you hate it for him but Barnes gave him every chance to get things going, at some point you have to make the tough call. So that trimmed the number down to 10, and I won’t be shocked if it hangs around there, Mashack is probably going to see some minutes every night because of his defense and offensive rebounding, but could see 9 some nights I would think.
5. Huge win for Tennessee tonight from a big picture standpoint, puts them a game ahead of LSU in the loss column and has them right in the thick of things in the SEC race with some key games still to be played. I said heading into this 4 game stretch that 2–2 would be the minimum needed and 3-1 would feel good, well they’re off to a 2-0 start so can’t beat that. Vols now stick around Knoxville and will play a Florida team that will be playing its 3rd game 5 days, 2 of which are on the road, Florida may be loose and ready to roll or they may be tired, you never know, but huge opportunity for Tennessee on Wednesday night. I’ve said 21-9 should be the goal and they now sit at 13-5, tonight was one of the toss up games on the schedule and we took advantage, now need to make sure to not give one back we shouldn’t.
GBO!!!
