If he outplayed nfl TBs in practice, why didn't he play much in the games?

If he ran for 15 yds on 3 carries while the VT game was still competitive while your future NFL player was struggling to his worst performance of the year (18 carries, 39 yards)... why didn't he play more in the game?

When Poole spelled MH briefly in the 3rd qtr, the score was 24-14. MH had rushed 14 times for 23 yards. Poole came in and had runs of 5, 8, and 2... then disappeared back on the bench.

Why do you think that happened?

We’ll see at the end of the season.

What exactly have you seen out of Poole to make you think he’ll be so great?

In his scant PT, he's shown great vision. He runs through tackles. He makes sharp decisive cuts and accelerates very well. He runs low and does a very good job of reading and setting up blocks.

The only real knock on Poole is top end speed... but he routinely breaks off big runs against UT's first string DB's.

Got PT on ST's as a true Fr, right? He then got "buried" by CLK but said he confronted CLK about his outperforming BB in practice and didn't get straight answers. IOW's, CLK was working an agenda with BB... and rightly so considering what he was trying to do recruiting wise. He had to play BB and make him look credible so that his promises to the next sure fire Freshman starter would sound legit. But you can't exactly judge Poole a "practice field legend" when the coach refused to give him the PT he'd earned.

You have no earthly idea what you are talking about on this... that was NOT what occurred.

I mean, it's possible that's what happened, but the fact that he was fourth string the year before Kiffin's arrival...

Yeah... but I'm not sure that particular depth chart helps your argument. A very frustrated Hardesty rode the pine behind Creer and Foster for much of the year... and I don't think you could argue that he isn't a much better RB than either of them.

Consider what we know about Coach Dooley. Apply it to the current Bryce Brown situation. Draw a line between the dots.

Bryce Brown WILL NOT be the starting tailback at UT this season, assuming he's even still on the team. Best he can do, to start, is 3rd string.

Now...Bryce Brown. He's a Kiffin recruit. Remember all the media hype...the amateur agent...his brother...and so on...ad nauseum.

Bryce Brown has a lot of talent, and potential. There's no arguing that. But he is the product of a family, an agent, media hype, and an overconfident ex-head coach who pumped his skull full of enough crap to choke a herd of buzzards. No wonder he's confused.

He's probably gone, and that is probably best for both Bryce and UT. OTOH, if he stays, it will be under Coach Dooley's terms, and that might be the best thing for both Bryce, and UT Football.

It's a long shot at best.

Go Vols.

I don't think it had anything to do with the injured Bryce Brown. Hardesty had proven he could be a workhorse and thus didn't need to be relieved too often.

When Hardesty had rushed 14 times for 23 yards then Poole rushes 3 times for 15 yards... seems like the logical thing to do is go with the guy who's finding the holes, right?

I argued pretty consistently last year that Kiffin had a plan and was working his plan. I think he did... and part of it was to bring in alot of highly rated recruits. Poole having a "break out" or getting PT ahead of Brown was not part of that agenda.

It stank for Poole and I really like the kid... but Kiffin was more than likely making a solid pragmatic decision.

Hindsight now being 20/20, does it still seem like a pragmatic decision...or the actions of a head coach who is more concerned about "today" than "tomorrow"?

Mind you, we would not be having this conversation had Kiffin not proven himself to be a liar..."I'm not leaving Knoxville"...

Truth is, I'm glad he's gone. I trust Dooley's judgement over Kiffin's, and USC is one strike away from the Death Penalty.

With Kiffin and Orgeron on their staff.

The Doomsday Clock is ticking.

Go Vols.

I don't think Hardesty got put behind Creer until the season was already pretty much lost and we were trying to find anyone that could get things done. I'd say Hardesty had our second highest number of carries. He was also our red zone guy, as you might recall. Arian didn't get a TD until near the end of the season in part because he was often pulled when we got inside the 30.

Could be. Could also be that VT chose to focus more on the pass when Hardesty left the game. I really can't remember how they played those particular runs. I do recall Hardesty not really being presented with too many holes to find, and he frequently had a difficult time finding a clear path back to the line of scrimmage.

Another thing about Poole... I think he's a lot like Hardesty. I think Brown was a bit more of a homerun threat and therefore was liked as a change of pace.

Hardesty carried our offense all year. No reason to think he won't eventually break something.

I have to agree. He's a fifth year player in his last game. I know that sounds Fulmeresque, but he'd carried the team that far and probably deserved the benefit of the doubt at that point. Not really the time to go tinkering too much with freshman and sophomore replacements.

I appreciate the recap.

He's clearly talented, so I hope he comes back.

That said, we have some pups in the backfield who can play so I don't think our future hinges on him.

No problem, apologies if it wasn't absolutely accurate, lol. Lot's to wade through these days. I'm with you, if he comes back, fine... if not, nothing I can do about it. They still gotta field a team.

Why do you think that happened?

Because Hardesty was the 2nd best RB in the SEC? Because he was the offense? Because nobody worked harder? Because he deserved the benefit of the doubt? Because he is the better back? Want me to keep going?

And Mike Garret as head huncho of the USC cheat shop.
The arrogance is goign to bit them all in the corn orifice.

He was fourth string before Kiffey, and now hes first. You wanna know who was fifth string and coulda easily been in the heisman race this year? Masoli from Oregon... Yeah he skrewed up in the past few months, but that just proves that you don't have to be a 5* prospect to be first string...
