It's time. We've worked our way down the list on all the top targets. When we're seriously thinking about Chad Morris as head coach of the Vols, there's a problem.
Cooter has the credentials, the intelligence, is young, and best of all, he's a VFL. He has worked wonders with Matt Stafford during his time with the Lions. The only negative to the Lions offense, which I admit is a big one, is their run game.
Previously, some of you guys were at the "he doesnt have head coaching experience". More than half of the NFL coaches are on their first head coaching gig, being promoted from NFL coordinator positions. This list includes: Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh, Sean McVay, Bruce Arians, Dan Quinn, Sean McDermmott, Ron Rivera, Sean Peyton, Adam Gase, and Mike McCarthy - all on their FIRST head coaching gig.
The other possible issue previously discussed was his lack of "recruiting experience". To me, this is a non issue. #1 Tennessee recruits itself: even in the worst years, we were almost always in the top 20. Peyton Manning, facilities, tradition, SEC competition and fanbase make Tennessee an easy sell. #2 He is bringing his experience from the NFL, which is a big selling point. He has worked with the pro's and knows what it takes to get there. #3 He is young, and can relate to where the recruits are in their lives.
The last negative would be the 2009 incident, where he went into a woman's house and climbed into bed with her. Doesn't sound malicious, more like a drunken stupor which is still bad. All charges were dropped.

So, let's keep this discussion based on the reasons you think Cooter could succeed or fail as head coach of the Volunteers. I am interested in your thoughts, and if you are open to him at this point in the coaching search.

With Cooter as his offensive coordinator, Stafford has posted his two best QBRs (61.1, 70.5) and best completion percentages (67.2, 65.3, 62.6) outside of his record-setting 2011 campaign (64.4 QBR, 63.5 completion %).
That bodes well for a guy you may want to tab to develop your franchise quarterback.
