It's time. We've worked our way down the list on all the top targets. When we're seriously thinking about Chad Morris as head coach of the Vols, there's a problem.

Cooter has the credentials, the intelligence, is young, and best of all, he's a VFL. He has worked wonders with Matt Stafford during his time with the Lions. The only negative to the Lions offense, which I admit is a big one, is their run game.

Previously, some of you guys were at the "he doesnt have head coaching experience". More than half of the NFL coaches are on their first head coaching gig, being promoted from NFL coordinator positions. This list includes: Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh, Sean McVay, Bruce Arians, Dan Quinn, Sean McDermmott, Ron Rivera, Sean Peyton, Adam Gase, and Mike McCarthy - all on their FIRST head coaching gig.

The other possible issue previously discussed was his lack of "recruiting experience". To me, this is a non issue. #1 Tennessee recruits itself: even in the worst years, we were almost always in the top 20. Peyton Manning, facilities, tradition, SEC competition and fanbase make Tennessee an easy sell. #2 He is bringing his experience from the NFL, which is a big selling point. He has worked with the pro's and knows what it takes to get there. #3 He is young, and can relate to where the recruits are in their lives.

The last negative would be the 2009 incident, where he went into a woman's house and climbed into bed with her. Doesn't sound malicious, more like a drunken stupor which is still bad. All charges were dropped.

With Cooter as his offensive coordinator, Stafford has posted his two best QBRs (61.1, 70.5) and best completion percentages (67.2, 65.3, 62.6) outside of his record-setting 2011 campaign (64.4 QBR, 63.5 completion %).
That bodes well for a guy you may want to tab to develop your franchise quarterback.

So, let's keep this discussion based on the reasons you think Cooter could succeed or fail as head coach of the Volunteers. I am interested in your thoughts, and if you are open to him at this point in the coaching search.

I have been saying from the beginning that we should go the NFL route - either Cooter or McDaniels.

Bringing home Cooter isn't easy.

Great. I feel the same way, because he's such a valued commodity. Care to share your thoughts on why it wouldn't be easy. I am inferring from your statement that you would like the hire?

The biggest reason he would turn it down is because he may want to be an NFL head coach. If he does, and I am assuming he does given his age, it would make more sense to stay as an NFL coordinator. I am hoping that money talks, and a big pay raise would bring him home.

Aside from his goofus name, I've been hoping we would take a serious look at him since the moment we axed Jones. We're not smart enough to do so was my worry. My concern was accurate, & also underestimated our stupidity.

Think that his comment was a play on the word "cooter":)

As is stated in every single JBC thread - he's going to be an NFL head coach soon.

Could he be convinced to coach us for 3-4 years before going to NFL as Head Coach?
We could even go to the coach in waiting thing with Tee coming on as OC for 3-4 years.

He maybe a Head Coach in the NFL as soon as next year. No way he would come here. If he wanted it, he would have been on the top of the list.

You can almost guarantee if it is someone that makes sense our inept AD won't even make the call.

Even if you put the Schiano fiasco aside, Currie tried to land Gundy with 7M. Gundy says no so your next option is Chad Morris? This guy is 100% inept.

Haven't seen that mentioned one time. Every time I bring up the guy, I get the same responses about lack of head coaching experience and recruiting. Let's get others on board with this and get Cooter a raise!

Then you really haven't been reading. It's stated every time and is the biggest reason

OK, just link to 3 of the times it's been said, besides where I say it above in this thread. I get on here almost every day, and have been pulling for him since the beginning. When I bring it up, the response has been negative as to his experience, and haven't had 1 person say it's because he is over qualified as you are suggesting

Simply scroll up and read the Twitter link. If you need 2 more then use the search function. It really works well on VN

I never said he was overqualified. I said a college gig is not his goal. It's stated in every JBC thread.

Not happening, per Ian Rapoport.

Thanks for the link. Cool that it is from this morning. You think if we double his salary (possible much more than double) to 5 million a year, he doesn't consider it? What's the median length of a head coaching career in the NFL? 5 years maybe? He can make that money here, and even if he isn't successful, could fall back to being an NFL coordinator.

Read the twitter link from 20 minutes ago is proof that it has been said for weeks? Wow OK

An NFL journalist is reporting this as current news (after I started this thread) so no, it hasn't been stated as such from that level before.

You going to tweet Ian that this is old news, too?
