trophy for the UT/Kentucky football rivalry. The last time we played for the barrell was in 1999. It was a decision made by C.W. Newton and the UT AD, Doug Dickey. It was stopped because two UK players were killed in an alcohol related accident.

I say bring it back. It was a 74 year tradition that made the game a little more important for both teams. I have no problem with it.

What do you say?

I'm for it somebody will go against because its alcohol (with i don't consume at all), but if over 50% of the advertisements on T.V. during sporting events advertise alcohol, then why cant we play for the Barrel Bowl once a year?

Hypocrisy is the name of the game.

Then don't call is the Beer Barrel. Just be politically correct and call it simply the "Barrel" instead. I just want our permanent trophey back.

The reason they stopped using it was reasonable. I would say the trinket was fun, but we can live without it. I don't think you want to risk hurting the feelings of the families invoved with that - unimaginably terrible what they had to go through.

Let's wait til 2011..... I'd hate to bring it back this year and then lose it right away...... Seriously though, I would like to see it make a return along with a few other Tennessee traditions that have gone by the wayside. I'd like to see the Tennessee Walking horse come back on a permanent basis!! Animal rights wack-o's can bite me.

We beat them this year anyway. They couldnt beat us when we fielded one of the worst teams in 2008

Not happening in this day of double standard, PC bs.

Like the double standard of having players who aren't legally allowed to drink playing for something called "The Beer Barrel"? It was a bit different when the drinking age was 18, but that was changed in 1984.

During Prohibition it was renamed the Ice Water Barrel.

Why not rename it instead of completely ending the tradition?

It would be much cooler to get an old Stutz Bearcat to deliver the barrel.

(My grandfather was a bootlegger during the early days of Prohibition and this was the vehicle of choice)

Because of the current social stigma attached with alcohol, especially with DUI's, the name "Beer Barrel is not going to be resurrected, but why not just change the name of the "trophy," calling it the "nail keg battle" or something similar. That wouldn't have any stigma and would allow the symbolism attached to the game to be returned.

Old country stores, of which there would have been plenty in Ky. and Tn., often had nails for sale in barrels. A nail keg wouldn't have any stigma and would allow the name symbolism attached to the game to be returned.

Re-naming it still wouldnt be the same. Changing the name from the "Beer Barrel" to the "Pickel Barrel" wouldnt work. It still would be different. Wait just a minute.....the "Chicken Ranch" is gone....the "Beer Barrel" is gone!!!! What is this world coming too?????:banghead2:

This made me think of a great moment in Simpsons history. It's the first 30 seconds of this clip.
