Taking my ball and going home mentality.

I bet you have never quit a thing.... especially for an opportunity to fulfill a dream of being a starting quarterback at the collegiate level. Just don't understand the banging on a guy that wants to try something different, especially if doesn't hurt anyone.

His problem is purely between the ears not his talent.
Agree. Not in the same way as JG but something prevented him from being consistent. I still think his problem is correctable. I wish he had not given up at UT since his potential is really high if that problem were corrected. But IMHO, Hooker set a standard that made Heupel's choice difficult for Maurer. Other than a little bit potentially on arm strength, you have two very similar players... except one has experience and has proven he can do it as the regular starter.

Milton also makes it tough since his consistency issues are similar to Maurer's but his ceiling is higher.

I've always defended Maurer as I have a lot of Vols and coaches when I thought people were being unfair to them in a way that didn't line up with the facts. But maturity could be part of it. He seems to need some success or affirmation to buoy his confidence. That became a lot harder with the addition of Milton and Hooker.
They were not speaking about his confidence. He relinquished any ownership of losing the job and his post made it all about himself. I’m not saying that he shouldn’t be upset and looking to change scenes but he chose the wrong way to do it… again. I want the kid to be a success but in order for him to that with any team he has to get out of his own way or he’ll just become the next Blake Barnett who was super talented but mentally corkscrewed himself into anonymity.

Yeah, myself and many others, including the last 25+ coaches the university of Tennessee have paid money to evaluate such things, seem to have a different opinion.
Name one of those coaches who said that Maurer did not have potential and did not show flashes of being really good. In fact, when the coaches have spoken about Maurer... they invariably talk about consistency, not talent or even demonstrated ability. The reporters who have had access to practices... say the same thing. The insiders who have had opportunity to watch practice.... say the same thing.

It is only you and a few "fans" that have a personal bias for whatever reason saying he has no talent or potential.

I'm not talking about him leaving. I'm talking about what he seems to need emotionally whether that's good or bad for the Vols or any other team.

He didn't "fight back". I didn't expect him to leave though I've come to anticipate Hooker and Milton being 1/2. I don't think he would have lost anything by staying on the roster for this year... and opportunity might have fallen in his lap. He is at risk of doing the very thing you said about Barnett. I hope he doesn't. I hope he can let this go and not let it become baggage that prevents him from succeeding elsewhere.

Butchna, try to find your humanity again. The Vol Nation boards have taken a lot from you. Do some introspection...if you still can.
When are you finishing up that doctorate in faux psychology? Party at Newt’s house!

Best way I’ll can put this is Maurer habitually did the right thing the wrong way. That stuff absolutely can hurt the team. A disgruntled qb can absolutely cause toxicity within the locker room by what they say, post, or act.

These boys need to learn that they are absolutely nothing like a soldier.
Heh, Enki, I think they are quite a bit like new soldiers. You know, young fellas right out of boot camp and AIT, freshly arrived at the unit. All energy and motion, not (yet) much knowledge or experience, no time (yet) to have developed that veteran patience and resolve.

That may not be the way Maurer meant it, of course. Probably not. Heh.

Go Vols!

There are right ways and reasons to leave a job or situation like this. Even if he has the right reasons, IMO he is not doing it the right way. He cannot play this year. The worst that could happen if he stayed with the team is that he could support them, show a good attitude, continue to develop, and essentially build a good resume to land a good spot somewhere else.

Most young guys like him lack the wisdom to know that opportunities sometimes come unexpectedly if you have patience and don't make a habit of shooting your own foot. The guys Heupel thinks are best right now... might convince him otherwise by mid-season. There could be injuries.

Since this season would be lost to him regardless, he could have been #2 with an opportunity to move up behind whoever becomes the starter this year simply because the other two decided to move on.

I do not know his reasons. He may have good ones. But I think the way he appears to be leaving is unwise and not in HIS best interests.

I've never quit on anything that I really wanted, but then again, I just kind of roll through life not really giving a sh!t about anything, especially a kid with zero life experience whining about how the mean coaches stole his dream after 4 days of camp.

Coach Majors took my dream away playing for the Vols too but so did every college coach in the country in 1987
I never even got recruited. If that old fart ever saw me burning down the sidelines in the B-team Greek division flag football league, I bet he regretted the hell out of his oversight.

Am I talking to him? You and 1vol8 share a log in?
No. So it is OK if someone rips you unfairly and publicly and lifts their leg on your reputation without knowing the details of your life or circumstance.... they can do so to 100's or thousands of people.... it is OK for them to be jackasses since they're not talking directly to you?

As far as 1vol8 goes, he knows I'm a UT fan and not especially a Maurer fan. Read my posts about the QB battle. I've liked Hooker while others wrote him off. I've said that none of them have Milton's upside if he can resolve his issues... which are near identical to Maurer's. You get WOW!!!!.... then you get wow. If Milton can become consistent then he has the ability to not only be UT's starter but the best QB in the SEC. He has top shelf physical ability.

Honestly Heupel has to do what's best for the team and sometimes that's not "fair" or what's best for a particular guy. It could be that he has two guys that show consistency and then two guys that don't. Maybe he chose to only carry one of the inconsistent guys forward in the competition... and that left Maurer out since Milton is more physically talented?

And... you still don't have to be a jerk toward or about the kid.

Taking my ball and going home mentality.

harsh, but yeah. i don't blame him if there are better opportunities to play elsewhere. first response social media posts have a way of making everyone look immature. I prefer to pout in private, get over it a bit before i let everyone know how i feel :)
