BREAKING NEWS!!!Cuonzo Martin removes name from Marquette search

What is says: "Cuonzo Martin has taken his name out of consideration for the Marquette job."
What it means: Marquette told him they chose someone else.

We've all seen this before. It's the same old baloney that always shows up in the media when a school interviews several candidates. It can only choose one, so each of the others candidates is allowed to save face by saying he withdrew his name before the school announces who it has hired. Non-selected candidates can then leverage the supposed interest from another institution to leverage a pay raise at his current job.

Baseless speculation is fun...

Completely agree, he will and really has to get a raise and extension, I just hope we are smart with the buyout. I was hoping he would take another job and saving us some dead money in a couple of years.

I just don't believe CM to be the guy to win at the level we all should expect and demand on a consistent basis.

He may be the guy, or he may not be. But that's the same gamble you would be taking if you were to hire a new coach. There are no sure things. He's proven that his teams get better as the year goes along. That has happened EVERY single season he has been our coach. We have played our best basketball at the end of the year. Sure, we would all like to have gone undefeated this year. But good grief, some of these folks need to give the man a break.

He just led us to the Sweet 16. We have momentum. If his last three years are any indication, even in a rebuilding year, next year's team will most likely give themselves a chance at the end of the season.

Cuonzo has proven success now. His message has a history of working. Without this tournament run I wouldn't feel this way. But college basketball is literally ONLY about tournament runs. The whole sport is built around it. Lots of teams didn't go on a run, so we need to stop dismissing it like it's not a big deal. It is a big deal. It was fun and we were relevant and on tv and radio for an entire extra week that 95% of other basketball programs were not. That is valuable. That kind of exposure makes coaches valuable. I hope he stays.

especially considering that it's 1 more year of continuity with this staff. We saw how much McRae, Stokes, and Richardson improved under his coaching. I think the others will too.

I wonder how many people remember that Richardson was a 3 star with no other major offers?

Didn't want him to leave anyways. Can't wait til UT makes a run in the tournament before Marquette.

All kidding aside, I'm waiting for the details of his new contract to be announced. He's earned a solid raise for next year.

you simply can't allow a coach to finish up his contract before you sign a new one. It looks like a death sentence and gets spun as one to every recruit. Way it works

We could give him a lifetime contract, and he still couldn't recruit.

They remember, it's just that they are the same crowd moaning about Cuonzo not recruiting 5 stars enough. Haha. Can't win for losing with those guys.

It gave him options which shifts the power to him in negotiations.

I still don't think that is the case, becaus I believe UT was ready to part ways regardless. UT was just waiting to see if he got an offer, and if he did would accept it or not.

Hopefully no one since he had offers from Georgia Tech and Penn State per Rivals. Also Oklahoma, TCU and Providence if what he said was true when he signed.

If UT was ready to part ways before he interviewed with Marquette, why wouldn't they go ahead and fire him today since the buyout is down?

In other words, you hope we fail.

I will never understand that mentality, how abysmal it will be for some fans to watch the entire season next year. They will be upset if Martin does bad, and they will be even more upset if Martin does good. Either way, they will always be hoping Martin(an incredible person) eventually slips and falls on his face. Not only is counterproductive, it just seems demoralizing.

So, the basketball forum is as bad as the football forum? That's why stay in the recruiting forum, I suppose.

No, both are good. Just different perspectives is all. We're all on the same team and want the same thing, just have differing views on how to get there.

Something to do with PAYING a buyout vs RECEIVING one?

I'm using what is the more likely scenario. You are using the other and believing the spin.

It seems pretty obvious that Hart convinced him to stay. I know it doesn't fit into your false narrative but that is how it is being reported as of now.
