BREAKING NEWS!!!Cuonzo Martin removes name from Marquette search

Letting Martin go or canning the guy like the UT Firing Squad proposes is just too risky at this juncture. UT's track record of landing that nearly perfect, can't miss, and proven coaching commodity is not exactly that promising. Basically, he deserves a couple more years to build on this momentum. If it doesn't work out, we/he move(s) on and that's that.

But I just don't understand why people choose to blame Martin on *every* inconsistency this team went through this season, but conveniently choose not to offer him any credit either when it came to crunch time. This team played solid defensive-minded basketball and showed OBVIOUS improvement offensively.

It's funny that now after people begged to get rid of the guy, we now have people furious at him for interviewing elsewhere. Give me a break.

Some people just don't get it. Some in this fan base would rather have a lying, cheating, cheerleader who's basketball team is out of control and was on the decline. Yes, it was on the decline. Pearl's last year was loaded with talent and he did not get it done. The NCAA did us a favor. Martin's teams have shown improvement each year. Yes they have struggled at the beginning of each year but his players have improved. This staff even made Barton better. Stokes has improved over three years. Martin broke through a barrier this year. This team went 3 and 1 in the tourney. The played a Michigan team to the end after being down by 15. GIVE THE MAN A CHANCE!

I don't see what's complicated about the situation. Guy coming off tournament run talks to people to create demand and leverage his current contract. It happens all the time. Pearl had the Pump brothers doing this for him multiple times.

I have no issue with that either. Sometimes you have to keep your current employer honest and the threat of leaving does that. Just have to be prepared if they call your bluff

Yeah, we get to pay another buyout in a couple years!

you simply can't allow a coach to finish up his contract before you sign a new one. It looks like a death sentence and gets spun as one to every recruit. Way it works

So basically the Marquette thing just gave Martin leverage for a UT contract extension and raise?? Thanks for NOTHING Marquette!!!!!!

Not sure why I expected anything different, we're never that lucky.

the morons are the ones thinking a man of his character would leave butthurt because of an online petition.
He's gone, they said. Thanks petition signers, you guys say. Clueless commentary.
Man of character is just like any other COACH. He used an opportunity to fleece more money/years out of his current job.

I'm in no way saying he's a bad person. I do think he is a man of character.

I would have done the same.

Pay him nell! Let him run off to another school if he wants. He should be happy he is not fired frankly. If someone else wants this mess, let them takle him off our hands and pay his buyout to take him.

Is everyone forgeting the first 25 games or so for the year because the last 8 or so we were actually playing well? Geez. I agree we will be back here next year with the same issue at hand; that is an under performing team.

Completely agree, he will and really has to get a raise and extension, I just hope we are smart with the buyout. I was hoping he would take another job and saving us some dead money in a couple of years.

I just don't believe CM to be the guy to win at the level we all should expect and demand on a consistent basis.

Not at all, he would've gotten both of those regardless based on the end of the season.

That's a good point. The flirtation with Marquette really didn't change anything other than to create some urgency.

That's surprising since they are usually right on target with their predictions.

If you have been on this message board for more than 6 months, you should understand that even the few people that don't spew bs can be wrong when speculating.

The fun part is when people are speculating but act like it's fact.

It gave him options which shifts the power to him in negotiations.

That's what I was getting at, but you said it better than I did. The point though is that he was going to get paid either way.

This says nothing about his character. He had every right to entertain a great offer from a good program when his current employer was less than committed. He would be failing his family and assistants by not looking into the Marquette situation. He would be a fool not to. We can leave a coach hanging in the wind but expect him to just ride out this contract with no commitment to him or the program from the UT admin? Give me a break. I also think it's hilarious that many of the fans that wanted UT to pursue Pearl WHILE they had a coach, think they have any room to ever question CMM's character.

I think Marq did UT a favor. It forces us to give him a contract extension, which will help in recruiting, and if in two years we are awful and fans start questioning why CCM was given an extension and buyout, Hart can just say there were other schools interested.

I find this argument funny. We were playing extremely well down the stretch. That would be significant improvement. Cuonzo hasn't been a world beater, but his teams usually get better as the season progresses.

That's typically viewed as a good thing.

How does a coach who is actively pursuing other jobs spin his loyalty to a recruit?

"I got offered more security and more money and turned it down, even when my employer left me dangling in the wind." Seems to speak volumes about loyalty to me,

"I looked at some options and decided UT was truly the special place I want to be"

every coach who is not at a top 5-10 program does the same. A coach in demand is worth more than one no one wants

especially considering that it's 1 more year of continuity with this staff. We saw how much McRae, Stokes, and Richardson improved under his coaching. I think the others will too.

Horse crap.

He painted his chest orange.

That and piss off a bunch of people that wanted him gone and rather him leave on his own instead of UT looking silly after a 16 run.
