I doubt there's anything going on that doesn't always occur when such negotiations lurch toward an agreement--we just never used to see it before. The acceptance of leaks just provides another leverage tool for the party in the strongest position.
It's life in the era of instant-continuous news, now with the addition of civilian eyeballs and gossipmongers posting from airports and monitoring city live cams from a thousand miles away.
Back in the day there would be people representing the parties in two rooms in a secure hotel in a neutral city, hashing out details over phones and fax. If everything wasn't in place for a stately coronation in time for the evening news, they'd wait for the morning news cycle. Always a polished presentation with little drama.
Now there's only bragging rights for whoever had the story first (and maybe 70% accurate).
